"Wanted you to fail, did I, now?"
Stefan sounded amused rather than angered at the elf's bold choice of words.
"Do you honestly believe that forty pushups is that hard a task? I can promise you with utmost certainty that anyone of your classmates with either a rural background or at least a token training in arms can accomplish it; they may find themselves exhausted after it undoubtedly, but surely not to the point of collapsing on the floor, helpless and bawling.
I am well aware of your strengths and weaknesses, this is true. I have deliberately chosen your individual assignment to be more focused on the latter. Even if you think yourself already excelling at something - and if this is indeed the case, allow me to free you from any such delusions: at best, you are a mediocrity with a spark of talent - the purpose of this stage of training would not be to hone those skills. On the contrary, your body will be prepared for practically any situation a battle mage might find herself in.
That is, of course, if you find it in yourself to carry on. The Collegium is not a prison, and should you wish, you may leave this place whenever you choose, free from the ring and reunited with your possessions. If, on the other hand, you decide to stay, then you will have to accept the fact that failure will be punished; drawing parallels on the consequences of a true battle mage failing, the punishment will be painful. It is as simple as that.
Now, you have shown disrespect again, which, as you are undoubtedly aware of by now, warrants a retribution as well," the taskmaster spoke. He made a pause, likely to see if the elf flinched in anticipation of another surge of pain, then continued.
"For the following week, from midnight to one in the morning you are to stand guard at the entrance to your sleeping quarters. You will be woken up and told when your watch is over; if you fall asleep or wake your fellow student, you will be punished again.
Now, while it would seem that you are not getting any breakfast today after all, you still have time to make it to Curator Malaghast's lecture in the Common Hall. You can decide that this is too hard to do and inform me of your wish to resign - or you can get up and finish the exercise.
Choose wisely, Elthalis Azuresong."

"Shows that you've never had to wake at down to fetch some water from a spring," Siber chuckled.
"And don't worry, Kim, unlike certain elves, I'm not suicidally stupid," he added, finishing his glass of orange juice.

"Good for you," Kim teased and finished her glass too - one of nice, cold milk. "No, bring me a block and a good axe and I'll whip you guys at chopping wood any time you want."

"Eh, I know the hilt from the tip, but that's about it," Siber shrugged. "And I'm not so sure I'll pick up swords if there is an alternative. I mean, you guys saw that frigging huge hammer too, right?"

"I could work with a hammer. I know full well what it does to a thumb," Kim said knowingly. "I can only imagine what it does to a forehead. Though that one - I saw it, all right - is way too big for me. Need something more modest, I do."

"Stefan Meszaros, Sire." Elthalis said and chuckled after saying it not panting once. "Do you always talk this much... Sire?" She said almost mockingly before turning face down and begining to make her last nine pushups. Her arms had somewhat recuperated to being usefull once again, but still aching.
Then she got up to her feet and ran effortlessly the five laps around the hall and reaproched Stefan the taskmaster. "Sire, i have made my choice." The elf said as smug as ever before walking past the taskmaster towards the exit. "See you later!" She said and waved him good bye with her right hand.
She walked in the blue side's path towards the common hall, to late for breakfast for her now anyway, and she would survive, be at a disadvantage sure, but sill manage to complete whatever task ahead. In her head she began to formulate a few tactics for her one hour punishment at midnight.

"Mace is like a cudgel with more oomph and different balance, right? Shield sounds good. Isn't it a bit in the way, though?" Kim asked, taking the opportunity to learn from someone who was obviously much more experienced.

"Pretty much," Octavian said with a nod. "A mace is generally more top heavy than a cudgel, considering that it has an actual head. However, this gives your swings a lot more force for a relatively small amount of effort. Shield's could get in the way, but they offer a lot of protection. Using a mace and a shield is a great way to tire your opponent and and take them down when they're weak."

'
Worry not when I talk, Elthalis Azuresong. Rather, be afraid when I fall silent,
' the taskmaster's voice echoed inside the elf's cranium, bypassing her ears and inserting itself directly into her mind.
Stefan himself only smirked; after the last student had left the Hall, he turned north and made several steps before vanishing.

Siber stayed silent; Tavi undoubtedly had more experience in that matter, so the scarred boy decided to just listen for the moment.

"Depends on what you're fighting," he said with a shrug. "For unarmored opponents, a blade is king. You only need to strike them once or twice to bring them down. Even a nonlethal cut will weaken them. For armored foes, however, a mace allows you to strike without having to penetrate the armor. It works especially well against chain mail. The mace will shatter bones and potentially breach the skin with bone fragments or armor. It means that you have to get more power behind the blow, but it's more reliable than trying to hit a gap in the armor."

The inside was a set of pistons and other such machinery needed to turn them. No fuel was present in it, however.

"Makes sense, Octavian. I trust we'll get to try them all, eventually. How about spears? A mage can't be better armored than a boar," Kim continued, drinking in the knowledge.

"Spears are usually for those fighting as a group," Octavian replied. "They work well with shield walls to keep opponents back. I wouldn't recommend using them against a mage since, 99% of the time, you're going to want to be in the mage's face. Giving them space will only give them the advantage."
