Everdark Invaders
The Kingdom of Frost
In a matter of hours, the walls of the black fortress were nearly finished. On each corner a tower were in the process of being constructed, and in the center - right above the entrance to the underground - a keep was being raised at incredible pace.
Meanwhile, the invasion army encountered no resistance on their path. A trail of soot and oil winded between the mountains, becoming longer with every passing minute but seemingly never ending. The vastness of the frozen realm was the first enemy to defeat; once the war had been brought to the peoples of Awe, the battles would be much shorter.
Count Raxis
The Everdark
Down below, initial reports of how the invasion progressed had reached the patient forgemaster. He was currently pacing a gas-lit room in front of a massive bay window, overlooking an industry greater than even the mightiest of ancient cities. A hundred yards below, a courtyard encircled by obsidian walls extended in all directions, surrounding the flanged iron tower that was his court.
He was pleased with how the invasion had begun, and with how the breach had been in a remote landscape, far from defenders. When the surface-dwellers had had time to mobilize a counterattack, it would already be too late. And he had the entire subterranean empire behind him - an empire of unimaginable resources. Victory was certain, in time. Time, he had. Without limits.

"Hmm. Bears aren't big proponents of math. I guess. Hah...I don't really know." The Prince shrugged with defeat. "They don't seem to be big on it. All those imaginary numbers...integers...negative numbers...hahhhh...I'm probably just too stupid to get it."

A knock interrupted the silence of the Count's chamber. It was a very careful knock, one designed to be quiet enough not to interrupt his thoughts, loud enough to gain his attention, and quivering enough to assure him that the one who made it only did so because he had no choice to, which meant you couldn't kill them. Right? R-right?

The Everdark
The count stopped his pacing and turned his head towards the door. As through telepathy - or perhaps he just knew his master's thoughts so well - the robed advisor quietly stepped out of the shadows and strode to the door. With a light touch to the handle it swung inwards to reveal the source of the knocking.

A small figure dressed in clerk's clothing and a suffocating mask bowed low. "My Count. The petitioners are awaiting your pleasure."

The Everdark
If the advisor's eyes had been visible, they would have pierced the clerk in such a manner that he probably never would have dared leave another message in his life. The count, however, made a creaking sound of some apparent acknowledgement. The advisor stepped aside and opened the other half of the door with a fluid motion, to allow his bulkier superior to exit the room.
That the servant should now lead the way was obvious. If not, well, then the clerk was obviously good for nothing.

Like all good servants, the minute their task which required their presence was done so was he, quitting the room so quickly and silently he might have gone through a mouse hole in the wall. Having some physical characteristics resembling a kobold, that may well of been the case.

A little later, the advisor to the count again opened a tall double door for his master. Stepping inside like a shadow, he briefly scanned the room from beneath his hood. The robes then turned ninety degrees and made way for the count to enter the hall, where he was to listen to the endless grinding voices of his subjects. Eight feet clicked softly against the polished stone floor as his frame filled the doorway and he made his way into the room.

Court was not an expedient matter. Even before the campaign there were many different departments, divisions, and bureaucratic systems in place to keep that corner of the Everdark running at peak efficiency on paper. With the war now came reports, requests for more armaments, denial of said armaments due to need for steel, excuses from the mines about why there was less ore to smelt, and a small delegation asking for more bread for the workers that everyone chose to politely ignore. It was no wonder it had taken so long for war to even be a possibility for even this corner of the Everdark.
At the moment, the master of whips was giving his report to the Count. The canine creature with a broad hunched back hidden in a black cloak slowly stroked a long, oiled black whip in his hands. He smiled toothily at the Count on his throne, a pair of small bug eyed glasses sitting astride his nose. "...and as a result whippings have been up an entire fiver percent across the board, my lord. The amount we have found that enjoy the whippings is also up to twelve percent. Of course we are limiting their whippings to better inspire them, but as a result we are-"
The doors boomed open, cutting off the master of whips mid sentence. A man in midnight black armour clanked across the floor, rubbing his eye with a steel gauntlet as best he could. His helm, a sweeping affair that rolled back like a shark's fin and with deep sockets for the eyes, was held in a free hand. He halted before the throne rigidly. Saluting sharply against his skin of granite, the man spoke. "My Count! I apologize...fortheinterruption. I have a report!"
"I was in the midst of mine," the master of whips shot at the interloper, stroking his whip with a greater fervour, aghast at the interruption of protocol.

The count impatiently tapped a long, chitinous finger against the armrest of his rather uncomfortable seat. Silence fell quickly, for the good of everyone present, and Raxis beckoned the suit of armour to approach and deliver his report.

The soldier marched forward once more. He saluted again. "My lord! I was on patrol, as was standard when I saw someone in unusual dress. A hood...colouredliketarnishedcopper. Recalling the recent edict on attire, I approached. I put a hand on his shoulder, at which point he screamed and threw dust in my eyes! Hethenturnedandranaway. My Count! I believe he was an intruder!"
There was a gasp from nearly everyone present.

Maon stabbed the Frost Blade into the glacier overlooking a vast wintery plain. Below the four armies marched the seemingly unstoppable behemoths of the Everdark. The Prince of Frost turned away from the line of hideous machinery and turned to the mighty army.
The Prince of Blizzards smiled at Maon, "Let's give them something to think about, shall we?"
The one who carried the Storm Blade turned away from Maon and nodded to a small snowbold-like creature. The thing in question bellowed, "Catapults!"
Twenty catapults carved from ice and manned by dwargnomes fired in unison. Twenty huge shards of ice sailed into the air and down onto the plains, headed straight for the mechanical war-machines. Each projectile was loaded with a fragment of the Eternal Ice; and would explode, freezing everything with cold from the heart of Hodir himself for twenty yards on impact.

The count tapped again, now contemplatively. "Why...," he creaked, "you come to disturb me directly with this..."
There was a slight pause.
"Very bold. Ill news, indeed."
He inclined his head slightly towards the robed advisor, who stepped out of the shadows and strode towards the door.
"You will personally oversee...that he is

. Resources will be allocated."
The count tiredly turned back to look at the master of whips, cueing both the guard to leave and the report to continue.

The guard saluted again and hurried after the robed adviser.
Sniffing at the ill breeding of the common folk, the master of whips turned back to the Count. "And our recent research into new, better forms of whipping are coming along wonderfully as well, my liege. Though naturally the nine styles of whipping as set down by Lord Tails seven centuries ago are impossible to improve on, we believe to have found several new possibilities for the form of the whips themselves. I have taken the liberty of bringing to you several prototypes for your discretionary eye..." the Master of Whips droned on.

"Master of Whips, I am certain that your new designs... Very capable. Leave them for my review," the count dismissed his talkative subordinate. He had more interesting reports to listen to. Like those of the Master of Steam and the Keeper of Coal.
All the while, he wondered how the supposed intruder had slipped in. Very curious, indeed...

With a shudder of delight, the master of whips nodded eagerly, practically bumping his forehead against the floor as he both bowed and fled backwards out the door.
"I reported here immediately," the guard informed to the shadowy adviser. "Deeming it more important his majesty learns of this."

Robed Advisor
Raxis' Court
The robes made no reply. In fact, the advisor didn't respond in any way whatsoever, which probably meant the reason was acceptable.
Leading the guard to an elevator, the advisor brought him down to one of the lower levels of the tower. Quickly pacing down a corridor accompanied by the clanking of the midnight suit of armour, they soon reached an inconspicuous door which the advisor opened similarly to the other ones before motioning for the guard to step inside.
Everdark Invaders
The Kingdom of Frost
Aiming twenty projectiles flung by primitive catapults at a mile-long column of thirty war machines and expecting to hit anything was optimistic, but sometimes you have to get lucky. The response was obvious: the fires intensified, more smoke spewed out of the stacks and exhaust pipes, and the cannons were revealed on the backs of most of the walkers.
Apparently tracing the trajectories back to the battery, they took a steady aim. The three closest guns each spat out a cloud of fire and white smoke, and the shells exited the barrels to the sound of thunderclaps.

"Oh icicles," murmured Prince Maon as he saw the missiles.
Prince Gshded stepped forward and unleashed a gust of snow and sleet, hoping to stop the incoming shells.
The first ice shard struck the side of the lumbering machine, exploding outward with a large bang, flash-freezing everything within twenty yards with ice as cold as the sun was hot.

Robed Advisor
Raxis' Court
The advisor entered the room. The door closed behind him, and for a moment everything was pitch black.
The tell-tale hissing sound of gas preceded a series of little flashes all around the large room they found themselves in, and the lights lining the walls began emitting their ghastly shine, casting it upon rows and rows of humanoid creatures standing at ease on the cold, hard floor.
The robes quietly turned and left Nehemiahn alone, the only thing signifying his departure being the door closing behind him.
