I'm a Paladin which is healing in 25 man raids.
If you listen to people that say you should spam Holy Light you're making a fool out of yourself since you will go out of mana in a few seconds. The beauty of a Paladin is Flash of Light. My Flash of Lights heal for avarage 1300 and I have around 12000 mana raidbuffed. That's ~87k healing for one full mana bar excluding mp5, Illumination regens and such.
Flash of Light healing with ~10k mana and Divine Illumination up when it's not on CD and decent mp5, you can go on forever.

1) Make sure Blessing of Light is on the tank.
2) Try and get the Opera libram from KZ =
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=285923) Alternate between FoL7 and HL4 every 10 seconds or so, to keep Light's Grace up for when you need to cast HL11.
4) Get add-ons to help you heal more efficiently. Clique and PerfectRaid are my recommendations.
5) Try and get a shadow priest in your group so that you can be less careful with your mana pool.
6) Heal meter isn't everything.
What I do is cast HL rank 1 before combat begins and everyone is in position. I have the MT set as my Focus so I can see his health/rage/buffs. I heal by clicking on names in my PerfectRaid frames, which are set to show me who has aggro, who has magic/poison/disease effects, health deficit.
The pull begins, I start casting FoL7 if I am not expecting big damage and keep that up until it is time to do HL4 to keep LG buff up. If the tank is taking a fair bit of damage, I will alternate in HL11 too.
If the fight starts with big damage on tank, I pop Divine Illuminate and spam HL11 until it's under control. Otherwise, I save this for later in the fight, for example at Morogrim when other MT healers are tombed and I need to step up a bit.
If I am casting HL11 and the tank is healed by someone else and I would overheal too much, I cancel the heal and swap to a smaller one. This saves a lot of mana in a fight.
Generally though, I watch the fight, anticipate the damage by studying tactics beforehand, make sure I am ready for emergencies and just keep a steady stream of heals going.
