The pet taunt is called "Growl". As long as it has the spinning shiny border it's on auto-cast. Right click on it to turn the auto-cast on or off. It may not be on the pet's toolbar- you might have to go into the pet spellbook and pull it to his toolbar. Also, Check that he isn't in tenacity spec- if he is, change him to ferocity since tenacity increases all his threat.

I sometimes find that the stop auto cast doesn't work from pet toolbar, so have to do it via pet spell tab

I've never had that issue. Do you use a UI addon? That might be causing that.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

yes i used lots of them, it was usualy in lfr when i forgot to lock growl, i just couldnt turn it off even though it locked on the pet bar it just would still get aggro after. but it may of just been down to fact i got initial aggro and kept it because pet was doing more damage than tank could out aggro. but i know there were times where i turned it off during a fight moved onto next trash and it still growled.

FYI that you are unable to turn on or off any pet abilities while you are mounted. When you mount you pet goes "full passive", to the point where even you can't control them.
If you had growl triggered on when you mounted, you will have to dismount to turn it off.
I have recently seen a glitch (during a ChemCo event) where when I zoned into a dungeon while mounted, it locked out the pet bar. It's only happened to me the once, but something to keep in mind.
(I probably should have submitted that as a bug..... oops.)
Also, unless I am mistaken Growl works just like any other 'taunt', where it increases threat against that target for 6 seconds. Once it has been cast, just turning it off autocast won't allow your pet to drop aggro. Especially if you have MD up. It may take 7-8 seconds plus for the tank to reestablish his threat.

Threat from taunts does not fade. There is the 6sec debuff, but it's rather there to indicate that a taunt has happened.
Maybe it also prevents non-taunting allies to get aggro during that time, I vaguely remember some notes about that, not sure though, haven't tanked much since early Cata.
However, threat from
Misdirection
will
fade, which is really fun when soloing taunt-immune bosses like
Malygos
(not to mention
Vortex
regularly despawning your pet and thus wiping its threat)
