I believe what actually happens is that different types of "pets" are given different types of buffs.
For example, if a Hunter has a turtle pet, it's considered a tank - and tossing a Greater Blessing of Light on a Warrior (a tank class) will put the same blessing on the turtle.
The only way to really override this is to rebless the pets with the appropriate non-Greater Blessings - probably only worthwhile when you're going into a boss fight, and not worth the hassle of keeping track of for trash IMO.

From what I have seen, all hunter pets get Warrior buffs, and all Warlock pets get warlock buffs.
I just don't bother buffing pets because I will have to use lesser blessings on them, which is too much of a pain for something that will usually die anyway.

Except the Felguard which gets warrior buffs.
As an additional note, demo locks with
Demonic knowledge
can have their spell damage buffed via buffing their pet. For example BoK would add 1.2% of the buff to the pet's stam/int to the locks spell damage.
