What makes me like this idea is for when there are none listed, especially crafted items. Yes, we have trade, and you can post wtb <crafted item> but its only on you're luck that a person able to make said item is both online and in a town with trade and actually sees your post amid the jokes, arguements, and people linking the million patterns they can make.
The need to check 2 pages could be pretty simply worked around by showing any 'wtb' orders for the item on mouseover. Not listing each one but merely a mouseover like:
Superior Mana Potion
<bid>
<buyout>
<10 orders available>
also having orders show when searching
You're Search did not find any items
4 orders available
Personally I think the 'trade chat' idea is horrible, seldom do i see it used for much real trading, most looking to buy/sell/trade/have crafted is just lost amongst all the idiocy. often the people half-way attempting trade by posting what they can do/make is overdone to the point of being spam, but it's most common use on my server/faction at least is to joke, often in very poor taste or for some to belittle others, trade is an absolute joke imo so the more real trade as far as craftables go that can be done through the ah the better.

I thought about this back last year when they introduced the LFG system. They really need to make a similar interface for the Trade channel where one simply types in & "fills in the blanks."
One selects "WTB" or "WTS" or "Crafting," etc. from a listbox. Next, the person drag-and-drops the items (or clicks their names) to add them to the item list (a temporary "note"-like system stored client-side, operating much like the "whisper" systems). A maximum of three items can be selected for display in the actual Trade channel & each may have an optional price displayed as well as quantity. The output would look like this in Trade:
WTS (20) 3.5g, (1) 7g, (7) 7g, whisper for more...
Simple, tolerable, & functional.

I quite like the OP's idea - and it opens up a far more stock-market like economy.
I could log on for 30 seconds in the morning and put in a buy order for 20 Primal Waters at 25g.
If someone goes in and lists them at 27, no purchase. If 10 people during the day come on and each put up a couple of primal waters for 22-25g then I log on in the evening to find I've bought what I need.
Equally, if someone puts a purchase order in willing to pay a higher price then they get priority on the items that become available.
The major problem would be that AH traders would basically constantly have purcahse orders up for everything, meaning they had total control of the AH economy for those logging in to purchase items immediately.
I like the idea as well.
I do not worry too much about *increased* market manipulation due to the addition of "bids" to the current system of "ask" auctions. The bids would make the market more transparent, not less, making it more difficult to manipulate. The bid histories would make it clear what buyers are willing to pay for a good. Good luck selling an item for 2x its worth to unsuspecting players when there are existing bid offers for 1/2 of what you are asking. Everyone will know the market is out of whack, providing an incentive to wait out the current imbalance.
This feature would increase market efficiency.
Furthermore a side benefit would be an increase in economic knowledge among WoW players since most would (unwittingly) become familiar with the bid-ask system commonl used in modern stock exchanges.

It'd be nice if Blizzard would consolidate weapons better instead of having every individually listed. Weapons listed instead of one-handed axe, two-handed axe, one-handed mace, two-handed mace, etc would be Axe -> One-handed / Two-handed (similar to how the armor tab works; Armor -> Cloth / Leather / Mail / Plate -> Head / Shoulders / etc).
Also, shifting Cloaks from under "Cloth -> Back" to "Miscellaneous -> Cloak".

There's only one improvement I can think of for the AH...
You know you have to scroll to the bottom of a page to get the little arrows that take you to the next page? They should be at the top too. People who spend all their life disenchanting objects, and putting each dust separately (That's right, not in stacks) on the AH, clogging up pages and pages and pages until you finally find an actual stack of them. It's annoying having to scroll down to the bottom just to go to the next page.
It's terrible :(
well there's a reason for ppl posting mats up 1 at a time... the ppl buying mats for enchants (and may not be enchanters themselves) won't buy big stacks if they only need 1, 2, 3 etc of the material...
i doubt their goal is to make it harder for you to get to the stacks...
plus, isn't it possible to sort on stack size?
