Lack of smite DPS in WotLK

I can't be the only one who's disappointed that with all of the changes to the classes and the major buffs for moonkin and ret pallies (to name just a couple) that they're still not fixing smite DPS to be a raid-viable spec. All of the talents are still there, just as they are, still missing any kind of crit damage increase or a way to keep from running oom during a boss fight, still scattered around all over the place with no sense of synergy with themselves or anyone else. Their only point of synergy with any other class, Sanctity Aura, is being removed from the game entirely. Lightwell is being buffed, but Holy Nova is still a joke.
I can't be the only one who thinks Holy Fire is the coolest-looking spell in the game, and sad that its only purpose is for a soloing healer. One time we took a pvp-specced smite priest to SSC because we needed ANYONE to fill that last spot, and it was beyond awesome to see the holy fires going off on a raid boss. Of course, his dps was terrible.
It doesn't look to me that they are even planning to do anything about this. Smite DPS just feels like a completely ignored spec. My new main is gonna be a resto druid =/

This is like druids complaining about not being viable moonkin tanks because of the threat reduction being rolled into one of their existing talents for "free".

or like mages not being viable because they dont have a melee tree. want to dps? go shadow. stop whining...
EDIT: and holy fire doesnt get used in a smite build... its spam smite and put shadow word: pain up when u got a chance....

you are crying because a HEALING tree cannot do good dps...
in the holy tree there are 2 talents that have a pure dps purpose, the rest are either dual purpose or healing alone, 17 are healing alone, so you cant give me the crap about the tree having the right to do both, holy is a healing tree period, with some dps talents to help healers grind
oh and of the dual purpose there are 5, still a healing tree

Smite Spec was NEVER meant to do damage in a raid in any serious quantities. If ANYTHING, it was as a supplement to Disciplines priests in PVP.
You don't see Holy pallies saying, "AMG! Why can't I do Raid DPS?" We have Damage trees for a reason and holy trees for a reason as well.

Maybe not on live, but with the damage upgrade and lower cast time it has received it's starting to look like it will be commonplace in the smiter's rotation. Meaning they'll be using it whenever its 10 second cooldown is up, much like they already do with Mind Blast (which will now proc Imp. Spirit Tap).

I can't be the only one who's disappointed
With all the cool awesome new spells ALL the priest tree are getting, all you can find to discuss is how the healing tree cant DPS?
I suppose you think that Resto Shammies should be viable LB nukers and Arms Warriors should be able to tank.
Retards like this make WoW less fun than it should be.

I'm even dreaming about an actual hybrid... backup healer with OH SH*T button guardian spirit, CoH'n whenever CD is up, use free smites, and maybe some mana using holy fires and smites when heals are good - provided we don't go oom, ofc.
Speaking from a raiding perspective: you're assuming that the OH SH*T button will actually get you out of trouble.
How are you gonna measure their performance at the end of the raid?
Would it be based on the DPS they do or the healing they do? Because they're not gonna do either job very well.
Would it be based on how many wipes they prevented? Because that would rely on people screwing up to begin with.
The bottom line is that you're better off bringing in a full-time DPS or a full-time healer in that raid slot.

The main problem with a off-heal/dps smite build would be the lack of spell hit... so yes you would get the occasional free smite, but expect a lot of 'resist'...

A good smite priest with alot of crit stacked would LOSE dps by speccing for a free uncrittable smite.
Believe it or not, this is not the case. Since the build only gets 4% hit from talents, you don't stack crit as much as you'd like, so the 30-something percentage of crit you'd need to justify that is really hard to obtain. Surge of Light also helps the build's mana efficiency since it can be combined with Inner Focus to get you out of the five-second-rule (which is actually worth it since the build also warrants gear with spirit).

Let's keep it civil. No need to be hostile towards your fellow priests.

there was no hostility :(
all i said was that the reasons have been stated many times before
and that the free smite is not worth it if you are geared correctly for smiting, stick to crittable full cast smites, or just do less dmg and savea minimal amt of mana.
