The sole fact you're speccing mutilate means your crit chance should be higher than your average combat-specc'd Joe. I don't think this will make it better than combat potency, but I'd at least like to see it come close to it's effectiveness.
Remember, potency procs from off-hand attacks only, while this will have a chance to proc from ANY crit.

It averages to 3 Energy per off-hand attack from combat potency vs the 0.9 energy for each crit. As a result, you need 3,33 times as much crits as Off-Hand attacks for this to be equal.
In simple math:
crit% * total_attacks / OH_attacks
>
3,33 (or 333,33%)
With a wooping 55,55% chance to crit, you need 5 times as much MH /yellow attacks than OH attacks.
It's not exactly correct, as I didn't factor in miss rate or 1-roll vs 2-roll, but you get the idea; it blatantly sucks.

Yeah, it's kind of true... In its present state, Focused Attacks should give approximately 0.749 energy per second, assuming 40% base crit and 55% Mutilate crit with 1,8 and 1,5 weapons and Slice and Dice on top of that. It's only 29% of what Combat Potency gives. Like poster above, I haven't factored in misses, dodges and so on.
With 50% base crit energy per second rises to 0,928. While it isn't much, perhaps it will turn out to be the best dps boost anyway around this tier level in Assassination tree...

Here's one thing to consider about mutilate rogues... as your gear increases, your ability to generate combo points increases (cold blood), whereas for combat, its much harder to increase combo point generation (you'd need piles of haste to get a noticeable increase to combo point generation from combat potency). Giving mutilate rogues the ability to generate more energy would cause mutilate to scale far too well (Crits would give you energy and then you'd crit with that energy for additional combo points), that's why the number has to be kept low. Otherwise, at the high end mutilate rogues might scale out of control.

True, however the question wasn't in if it's better than CP, but is it worth it in the first place.
