Blizz won't allow beta character transfers. I think it's worth it - I'm in a profession that also requires beta testing, and I'm always thankful for another couple pairs of eyes to go over everything. The feedback process is quick and painless. A blue question mark will appear above your action bars each time you complete a quest. It provides quick access to a clickable form answering some basic questions. I do wish the form had an option for "No Reward" for breadcrumb or messenger quests.
The beta community is also nice, full of similar people who want to help make WotLK amazing. People are helpful, courteous, thoughtful, and nice - atleast in my experience.
So yeah, I think being a beta tester is worth it - in some small way you can say you helped make WotLK what it is, you helped polish it for mass consumption, helped make it great.
And, I think it's also invaluable to figuring out how you want to spec your DK with the 1c respec cost :}

The other side of not getting to keep anything you earn, is that you get to leave all your beta mistakes behind you, hehe. If you're worried about burn out, if you happen to have a lvl 70 of the other faction than your main, you could experience beta on that character instead of your main. I'm choosing to do this, so far it's working out and it's a nice change of pace.
And thank you for serving your (our?) country - you're the
real
hero class!

i told my wife that i got in the beta test and that for once in my life, i finally feel like i'll be a part of something big. she then said "you were in afghanistan and iraq and a part of the whole global war on terror thing, how is that not big?".
i then told her that i get to be a death knight. women will never understand....
Lol, priceless! :D

Well it's not necessarily all about personal gain; you're helping improve the expansion and freeing it of bugs and such before release, even if it's just some minor things. In the end, all the little help becomes a huge help.

I told my guild I would quit raiding to beta test lol (pending opt in). I honestly think that it is worth your time as for me BC is growing a tad stale after all of two years. Ah well, if you would rather achieve permanent things you can always just wait like those of us with no key.
