The email address listed doesn't need to actually exist for it to show up.
You can easily falsify the header information in an email to show a "from:" field that isn't real while still retaining a valid "reply to:" field.
In short, if it is real, and looks legit, type your response email SEPARATELY from the other email. Don't copy/paste, don't use reply, but rather start a new blank email and type out the address yourself.

Not really. I received a mail not long ago from "pognartosh.wowgm-attt-blizzard.com" asking who I wanted to promote to GM in my absence. I was GM of a guild that had active people in it and didn't log for a month. Note that the email didn't ask me to click any links, reply with my password. Basically it looked like this:
Account Name: <>
Character Name: <>
Realm: <>r
Guild Name: <>
After review, it has been determined that the above character has gone more than 30 days without logging in to the World of Warcraft. We have received a request from a guild member for a new Guild Master to be appointed to allow for proper guild management and growth. In order to complete the leadership transfer, please reply directly to this email with the name of the officer you would prefer promoted to Guild Master in your absence. Please keep in mind that transfer of guild leadership will give all guild permissions and full bank access to the newly promoted Guild Master.
We hope you understand that this request has been made in response to a concerned member's petition, and is intended to assure the prosperity of the guild.
Thank you for your prompt attention and understanding!
I replied with the character's name I wanted to be promoted and lo and behold, he was promoted mysteriously.
