if a wipe is coming, and you use it as agro dump to not corpse run... it's mostly not a big deal for others...
but if there was a chance the remaining trash mobs couldn have been killed by the remaining ppl still standing (maybe a hybrid would take over the healing role and an other melee starts tanking), and you "chicken" and feign death it's an other story... and you'll most likely get a few comments from your players indeed...
but if i were you i wouldn't worry about it, since you introduced yourself that you're not the best skilled hunter around and that you're still learning... you'll most likely get the oppertunity from that group to explain yourself and you might learn a new thing...

One of my hunters is an engineer, so if a wipe occurs and there's no soulstone up or shaman around he can try to use his jumper cables to rez a rezzer.
Best reason to be a hunter/engineer. You will find that if you FD at an appropriate moment (all chances of healing gone, tank dead, outnumbered by high hp mobs) and you have a chance to res the resser after the wipe, you will be called on time and again to group with people who can see that you are not the "noob" you rate yourself as.
As for your comment about continuing to learn, well any good player worth his game card/subscription will continue to learn no matter how long he/she has played the game. There is ALWAYS something new to learn, even if it's something small hiding away somewhere in some hidden corner of the game.
Sounds like you're less noob than a lot of the players who rate themselves as pro to me!

The idea (in my opinion) is, only do it when you see both the tank/healer die, and when you are positive it will end in a wipe.
I rarely get angry over a hunter feigning death, I mean, why make the guy run back and have to pay a higher repair bill if he/she doesn't have to. Just make sure that you would have died if you hadn't done so...
A few times, I've seen myself and a hunter be the only ones left alive, and only like 2 mobs left. I CC thinking we can take em, and the guy just feigns death for no reason... Then I get angry, because I died, even though with the hunter's help, we could have killed the 2 mobs.
It's usually very easy to tell when and when not to Feign Death though, and I've never seen it cause to much of a problem either way, if anything the leader will probably just give you some advice, which is rarely a bad thing.

why worry about it? every other class that has an ability like this will use it no question. Vanish, invisible, iceblock, FD its there for wipe prevention =)

Maybe coz I am not lvl 70 yet but my FD in instance never works lol. When happens is if the tank dies but the healer is still alive and it looks like we might wipe I usually use Distracting shot and pull the mob towards me and I die. At least that way we might save the healer and then he/she can rez us back lol.
Since TBC the resist rate on FD has skyrocketed in my experience.
Hence the 2set bonus for T4 "reduces the chance Feign Death will be resisted by 5%".
Pre BC I could pop FD sure in the knowledge that I would survive without any problems.
Since BC I have found that suddenly the FD mechanics were changed and I would get an FD resist that would ensure I got a pounding about 10% of the time.
I think it depends on where the mobs are in relation to you and where you are on the agro table (although that is pure conjecture, I have FD'd in a corner out of the way and still had resists).
Nothing is more frustrating than thinking you have escaped the wrath of #insert raid boss name here# only to discover that they still come over to give your "corpse" a good kicking!
