I really want one of those pets, got a beta invite in the mail yesterday so that would probably go to a random guildy. The figure print would be nice too.... though no chance of that. Some of us have to work and so I can only do the 3rd and 4th days on Sat and Sun :(

If you're in the Central timezone, the contest will start at 12:00pm (aka noon) for you.
How did you guys going about searching them? Im kinda confused...some of those pictures dont show much and when I try to search them its very clumsy.
First off, I did the search in order in order to make sure I didn't screw up the URL order in my email—because the URLs don't have any sort of distinguishing "this is Dirk Thunderwood" hint about them, it was just easier for me to do it that way... and I figured if I got stuck on something, I probably wasn't going to win anyway and thinking about it by skipping it and coming back wouldn't help.
The first screenshot was

. The very first thing I noticed (other than the fact that it was a male dwarf which made me want to destroy it in a super-hot fire lol :P) was that it obviously wasn't in Ironforge, Dun Morogh, or any normal "dwarven" building—the color in the background was wrong for it. It's also a very "rogue-y" dwarf, and there's a bottle in the background. That reminded me of The Perfect Poison in Silithus, where a dwarf rogue NPC asks you to get venom sacs from the earlier poison bosses in AQ20 and ZG. I couldn't remember his name, but a quick search for "The Perfect Poison" (the quest name which I remembered) told me the name. I looked up Dirk Thunderwood, and the screencap matched the shot exactly... one down, four to go.
Next up was the Hellfire Spineleaf. I play primarily alliance, but I have done Outland on Horde characters at least twice, and even if I hadn't I tend to notice things on the ground that don't look "quite right" like ground spawn quest items do (it's always helpful to know where ground spawn quest items are, in case you just don't have the quest to get them yet and you need to go back and find them later :) The big issue here, of course, is that there are four possible "Hellfire Spineleaf" screencaps—one for the quest, one for the item, one for the object you loot the item from, and a potential fourth from the Hellfire Spineleaf food you get as a quest reward. Knowing that there were multiple items with the same name and potentially the same screencap, I checked them all. The item and the quest both had screencaps that were darker in tone than the contest shot, but the object had a unique screenshot that told me it was the right one.
Being Alliance—and being something of an exploriation junkie—gave me an advantage on the Lightbringer Battlegear shot. I recognized the background as the Exodar immediately, but three things were wrong about it being an NPC: first, the paladin trainers (where such an NPC would reside) are in the yellow section of Exodar, not the purple. Secondly, T6 was not implemented when TBC first came out, and all of the trainers in Exodar wear pre-TBC sets. Finally, the Paladin's boots and belt did not match the rest of his armor, and generally speaking, NPCs wearing tiered sets will match thoroughly. I didn't recognize the belt or boots but I did recognize the set as paladin T6. From there it was just remembering what the set was called, typing it in correctly (lol at searching for "lightbinger" :() and finding the correct screencap. I was going for the full sets first, and would have started going for individual pieces, but I hit it on the second attempt.
Once again looking at the full screenshot helped tremendously on Screenshot #4. Undercity is pretty unique in its architecture (at least right now ;) and that tipped me off right away. Additionally, most of UC's guards are abominations, except the special "thief catchers" which are elites and stealth-detect. I couldn't remember the name of the Undercity guards (IF is "Thief-Catcher" and Org is "Scout") but doing an NPC search in Undercity and sorting by level found me a group of "Seeker" NPCs that were 60 elites... from there it was again simply a matter of finding the NPC that matched the screenshot.
Finally, the book was in a well-lit human zone (the carpet and full screen glow-style lighting gave that away). There were a few places it could have been, but the most likely was Stormwind. Since there's a library in Stormwind, there were going to be a lot of available books, so again it was simply trial and error until I found the book that matched the screenshot (not got close... but matched exactly). Something to note, searching for Objects and then narrowing it down by zone will NOT pull up book items, but searching by zone and then hitting the "Objects" tab will o_O Not sure why that is why it is, but it is so meh :P
Being a gigantic WoW nerd definitely helps, but I think with some basic knowledge of the game and some good common sense and detective skills, anyone can own face at a game like this. I've always loved these kinds of games and contests (Highlights spoiled me as a kid, lol) and I'm usually pretty good with them. A guildmate of mine eventually got all five screencaps with only minimal input and clues from myself, though he found himself getting stuck on the horde-centric ones, while a horde friend of mine complained about the book almost non-stop :P

but I think with some basic knowledge of the game and some good common sense and detective skills
Having certain things memorized like what color of Exodar paladin trainers are, memorizing some random fact that Blizzard uses the name Hellfire Spineleaf in 4 different ways* (how many people have asked this from you in the past?), and having one of hundreds (if not more than a 1000) of quest names memorized (from Classic, no less) is far less common sense and detective skills than simply being a "gigantic WoW nerd". In fact, you won't win unless you are one or all the ones participating in the contest finally pass out on their keyboard when the next day's contest launches due to lack of taking care of themselves. Coordinated team efforts would also work for a win but I would imagine that's borderline cheating and goes against the spirit of the contest.
Kudos
on examples where you did not rely on rote memorization of near useless information at the time of absorption (outside of winning this contest, in hindsight). Things like searching for NPCs in a zone based on a background that is pretty tell-tale (as you said, for now UC is unique) for anyone who has been inside, or not giving up after WoWHead's little problem with the Object->Zone vs Zone->Object listings are the useful sorts of examples that people can gleam from in order to find what they are looking for.
Before anyone is thinking "Wow, this guy is just whining because he lost.", I didn't even enter (my previous post mentioned that I had not yet heard of the contest until after the winners were posted). I'm simply helping Xella and other readers understand where reputable advice can be found, and where other cases can be interpreted as boasting.
Moving beyond my critique of your tips and tricks/walkthrough for your Day 1, I'd still encourage everyone to attempt to get all 5 right every day even if it takes you more than a half hour (assuming you have the free time). It's a fun diversion and a great personal achievement! No amount of intelligent (
EDIT
: gumshoeing...I used a different detective word that somehow got censored) will beat simply being able to flinch respond to screenshots and linking the name with it or extremely obscure details to put you within arms reach of the answer. You simply cannot beat rote memorization (and in this case, of facts that don't bear much use or relevance to the game and especially throughout the coarse of one's RL). Storing such a large cache of data in your mind of information that could very likely never need to be recalled again is much more of a talent than a skill. Gaining a better understanding of how a database works and creative methods for searching
is
a skill anyone can master and applies not only with finding something on WoWHead you don't know the name of, but internet search in general. Good search engines like Google are often only limited by the human mind and not their code/hardware.
*Both an object and item given the same name in this specific situation make no sense, as the item cannot be seen as it sits in your inventory (besides an icon) as it can not be dressed...you can only identify the item from the object you are looting from. The objects despawn when you loot the item so the object and item are one-and-the-same minus the hair-splitting technicality that one is a doodad and the other sits in your inventory. They really should have the exact same screenshot.

I wonder, can you use the beta key to upgrade one account, then use the pet code on another account?

I honestly think that this is a waste of time. All people get for getting this is a right to brag that they don't deserve at all.
