For some it will be a sense of accomplishment or another thing to grind for. There's always someone who wants to have all the tabards or be exalted with everyone, and they will probably have an achievement for that. If you have been playing a long time you may find yourself having achievements that can no longer be received due to changes in the game (like the old Battleground titles for example).
Some of the achievements give rewards in game, such as the one that gives you a skunk pet for having 50 mini-pets on your toon.
Maybe Blizz will have more info later on what you can "do" with your achievement points, but for the moment I don't think they can be used for anything.

So far there are some unique titles you can get as well as mini-pets and tabards with the points. No word on what else you'll be able to do with them yet.

Note me on this...
Achivements are going to ruin this game.
Exmaples,
(1) "LF1M dps for Naxx"
(2) "Your not full..."
(1) "Were trying to get an achievment"
(2) "Not this crap again"
(3) "Why aren't you capping anything this side of AB is dead"
(4) "There is an acheivent to sit here and defend it for 20 minutes"
(3) "Is that really worth losing noob"
(4) "STFU all I want is acheivements here anyway /ignore"
So it's people choise if they doing something they don't have to make it normal or so. Like there was a video of 5 maning gruul like :
(1) Ok guys let's go
(2) Hey guys where ya going ?
(1) Gruul
(2) Are ya full ?
(1) No
(2) Can i come ?
(1) Nop we doing it 5 man
(2) Crap
or something like this if people want to get their skills up to ( as player skills since it's harder to do something in 20 ppl then in 25 ppl) it's their choise and they should get bonuses for it.

I would think acheivements would run much like the bear mount. If im going for a bear mount, i dont want some scrubby rogue with 71 dps weapons, im going to be selective and pick the rogue dual weilding 100+ dps weapons. If you are looking to do a raid shorthanded , you wouldnt make it a PuG, you would make it a guild run. As for not getting invited because of this, you shouldnt blame achievements, you should blame your guildies. This is one of those things where they need to post on their forums and sign up. Why would achievement farmers be pugging? thats just not very smart.
It wont destroy PvP. how would going for this acheivement ruin your game?
Arathi Basin Perfection
. And there is no set time limit to defend, mostly becuase there isnt much of a way to tell if you really are DEFENDING. defending in achievements is recapping a node the opposite team ahs tried to capture. Thats a good thing! From what i can tell from browsing all these achievements is that they are designed to make players do beneficial things for the team. There is no "report 50 people afk in one match!1!1!" or "Win AV with no towers or graveyards!"
Achievements are not going to ruin the game and you're making ludicrus examples to try and justify it.

But the achievement only says to kill the final boss with 8 players (20 for 25 man). so if you wanted the equivilent to a kara badge run in Wotlk, you'd really only tag along till the final boss.

Some achievements have their own special rewards (usually meta-achievements). However, no word on general achievement rewards has been found. I'd imagine we'll know soon enough, since they probably wouldn't have had the point system at all if they weren't planning on some kind of general reward system.
