Let's say this is how it is in the middle of a fight:
Threat meter shows:
You the Hunter (110% aggro)
<- aggro
Prot Tank (90% aggro)
Holy Priest (40% aggro)
Enhancement Shaman (1%) because he just died and used Ankh.
If you use Feigh Death and...
... it gets resited; aggro will stay the same and you will get the cooldown. If you got 5 mobs on you and it resists they will stay on you, it's not like it resisted on some and not on some other. Resist is resist, no aggro reduction on anything.
... it works and you drop "dead"; you will reduce your aggro to 0% and anything that was on you will change to the #2 on the aggro list, and in this case the Prot Tank. The new meter would then look like this:
Prot Tank (110% aggro)
<- aggro
Holy Priest (50% aggro)
Enhancement Shaman (25%)
You the Hunter (0% aggro)
Some extra info about FD:

About the mage, it might also be that if you root/immobilize a mob it will then hit the highest on it's threat that is in range. If you FD, you drop to 0% aggro but if you stay in combat with the mob and go up to it close while it gets frost nova or similar, it will attack you until the immobilize effect runs out.

Your aggro simply disappears. As for why the mob would attack another player, if it was attacking you, it will go to whomever was below you on that mobs aggro table. Assuming your multi-shot example, you probably hit a sheeped mob, and in that case the mage who was polymorphing was highest on aggro table.

What you are seeing is the result of how a mob's threat list works. In order to get a mob to switch targets you need to reach 110% of the current target's threat if you are in melee range or 130% of the current target's threat if you are further away.
The mage in your group might have been at 115% of the tank's threat and was nice and safe. Unfortunately for them you then pulled aggro, drawing the mob into melee range of the mage before using feign death. The mob is not on top of the mage and they have more than 110% of the tanks threat. Nice work, you just killed a party member.
The best way to use feign death is to use it preemptively, to prevent you from ever pulling aggro in the first place. Obviously sometimes you mess up and get a mob on you, that's ok and feign death is a great way to put it back on the tank but do your group a favor and move it back to the tank first. You get to wear more armor than most of your group and even heavily armored paladin healers would probably rather heal you than try to heal themselves while getting hit. Drag that target back over onto the tank and then feign instead of dropping it onto your group.
