I'll assume you're not terribly high in level yet. The reason I say this is as you get higher in level, you realize how crappy of a skill Backstab is, even if you're spec'd for the 30% more crit.
The problem with switching weapons in combat is it trips the global cooldown so you will lose a bit of DPS during weapon switches (unless you wait to be out of energy, but then you've blown energy on attacks with a dagger, like SS, which will do less damage).
Now, I didn't level my rogue combat, I was a sub rogue before BC who switched to mutilate at 2.0 (and now Shadowstep/Hemo). I'd only done combat maces when it was flavor of the month, so I do appreciate how good backstab and ambush could be if blizzard made them decent skills, but when looking at damage per energy, once you get over a certain level (I'll just say 40, arbitrarily), I wouldn't use backstab while in a combat build.
Once you get to 50, if you feel like you still want to be a sneaky backstabbing rogue, there's nothing wrong with going Mutilate. It won't do better total damage than combat, but it is just as fun, imo.

I was in the same boat you were and decided I'd use an addon called "OUTFITTER" which automatically switches my MH to dagger for those AMBUSH purposes (when in stealth) but I found later it was pretty much time consuming. Yes it was FUN but only if your facing one mob. I ended up keeping my daggers and leveling it for the future in case I decided to go Mutilate...

As a side note, playing a rogue has really helped me understand you sneaky bastards a lot better (like for instance, I had no idea sap costed so much energy and that the reason you sapped and then waited for so long to attack wasn't ALWAYS because you were pricks, you needed to get the energy back), and has made me a better mage.
Actually, Sap isn't all that expensive - only 33 Energy after putting 2 points in Dirty Tricks (which also extends Sap's range to 10 yards which *really* helps when you have to approach something from the front).

Well, that's 12 wasted points. Especially, if you aren't pvping. Distract is your friend, use it.
Considering my normal solo PvE habits (my recent foray into Twilight's Run in Silithus being a typical example: stealthed through the cave, Sapped the few who were in the center of the path while making my way to the back, then Sapping the guy next to the boss, slaughtering the boss, looting, then reStealthing and sneaking back out), those 12 points are absolutely unwasted.
Still can't see the attraction of Distract...

Those points are absolutely wasted dps-wise.
