So i was in ZA, and heartless dropped.. i rolled need, so did the tank..i lost it.. after a mini flame war, he was kicked...all the other runs, 3 hats dropped.. as of right now im stuck with talonblade
IMO it should be mainspec first if they need it.. then if nobody needs it then roll for offspec.
IMHO thats how it should go

Most guilds and PUGs roll for Mainspec first, and then offspec when no one rolls for main. If that tank is in your guild you should /pwn him but if it was a PUG that's understandable. Sorry about your weapon though...
But the next time you do a raid where something you might want drops the raid leader should clarify that you roll for offspec AFTER the mainspec people.

Grimmnacht, if its a BoP weapon there will be a box asking if you want to take it after you have pressed need.

We use Master Looter for just this issue.
Typically, we roll for "1st set only". (that means your "primary" spec) Then, if no one rolls, we open it up for "off sets". If no one rolls, we open it up for "anyone". Failing that we d/e or roll to vendor.
We explain this ahead of time and it works very well.

For 2 people rolling on mainspec, my guild will let one person not roll on it for mainspec if the other person is receiving a larger upgrade. For example, if a T4 Pally/Rogue/Shaman chest drops off Mag's and the main tank is using Panzar'Thar Breastplate and the off tank is using Jade-Skull Breastplate, the offtank will get the chest automatically because it's a much larger upgrade for him. That's how my guild decides to do it.
Of course, exceptions are made when one person has been raiding with us loyally for a while and has wanted that piece, the other person will have to wait until next time.

Before the advent of badge gear, ie: pre-BC, my guild had the rule that tier gear was special and it did not have to be an upgrade. The feeling was that everyone should have the chance to complete the tier set. We used a DKP bidding system so that people had to "pay" for their set gear.
Now that badges can buy gear that is better than T4 and some T5, I've found that people tend to treat T4/T5 gear as just another source of gear. They don't seem to value completing the set nearly as much.
Anyway, other than exceptions like that, we always use main spec before off spec, main char before alt char. If I'm in a pug where I want a drop, as opposed to just grinding badges, and someone breaks that order to ninja something, I bail.

If it's a completely guild-run affair, it's via DKP. BT/SW stuff, anyway. Anything below that is free roll for offspec, Disenchanting, etc.
If it's a PUG, or involves people outside of guild, if you want an item, roll for it. We assume that most people have the tact to pass on items that aren't upgrades...usually this holds true. In the end, it's just another purple that will invariably drop again at some point anyway. There's no use in dissolving a group or getting frustrated over it.
