hey all, im just wondering, how important is being hit capped?
lots of people i see, in kara thru Sunwell, get
some
but dont cap it.
for most (melee/physical) dps 142 is the hit cap. yet, i rarely see anyone with 120+
i understand their standpoint that sacrificing some agi/crit/ap/str/haste for hit isnt worth it, but in long fights, where (lets say... a rogue for example) you're attacking hundreds of times, thousands even, of those vast amounts of attacks, if a few hundred missed, then its "no big deal" right?
wrong! if those misses hit, or even crit, then your dps would probably increase significantly right?
just wondering.

What class are you referring to?
Shamans, Rogues, Fury Warriors (dual wielders) hit cap their yellow attacks at 9%, and anything after that only increases their white damage, so 1% more hit doesn't translate to 1% more damage at that point. more hits does not mean more crits, as that's not how the hit table works.
Classes that can fully hit-cap at 9% (hunters, warriors, shamans, ret paladins using a 2h weapon) should always hit cap as that is a linear 1% hit = 1% more damage function.

Where are you looking at these people. Physical damage dealers should all be able to reach +9%(142 hit rating) hit to maximize their damage against a boss and dual wielding classes want even more hit if they can get it. However against a level 72 mob you only need 6%(95 rating) to be hit capped and many players will swap out some +hit items in favor of more damage when soloing or fighting trash. Depending on the gear choices available players may prefer to take damage gear and rely on the +hit rating food buffs to get their last 20 points as well.

For enhancement shamans, the yellow hit cap is at 0 hit rating. For (most) fury warriors, the yellow hit cap is at 95 hit rating.

The thing is that all the melee dps classes, and most of the ranged/casters dps apart from feral druids have +hit talents. Therefore they dont need to have as much hit rating as they would if the talents were not present.

Reaching the cap is not what's important, reaching the point where hit is not the most useful stat anymore is. Maximizing your potential damage is all about knowing what every stat weighs and what you'll get out of it.
Take for example fury warriors, where the hard cap is at 442 hit rating (395 after 3/3 precision). That's when you've maxed out the hit for white damage as well as special attacks. At 95 hit rating you've maxed out hit for special attacks, the soft cap. After reaching 95, hit is not worth as much anymore, which is why you need to re-evaluate what stats you'll benefit from the most. (

)
You will rarely stay at the soft cap unless you've gemmed for hit, certain gear can be a dps upgrade even though you'll get a bit lower on hit (probably not below 9%), this is what DPS spreadsheets are for.
And last but not least, just because someone is in Sunwell sadly doesn't mean he knows what he's doing. Sure, he does to a degree, but for example there's resto shamans that hasn't even considered spell haste.

The only time you see someone who needs 142 rating to be capped reguarly is a BM hunter
and lets face it, how many of those really bother theorycrafting how to max potential damage?
hehe, im a BM hunter :)
and the main reason i asked, is because i was looking up some of the other high-end hunters on my server, including some of which i've spoken to, and most of them have 100-135 hit rating.
Ty for all the info, cleared up much.
Now, another question, what's the hit cap for pvp?
for a.... ret pally, BM hunter, and Feral druid (#s plz, % confuses me)

5% melee/ranged, 3% spellcasters.

Where did you get that number from?
Wowwiki shows you would need
3% spell hit
or
5% physical hit
chance to be capped against an equal level player.
Sorry about the percentages DrDrako but given the number of +X% hit talents available that's the only reasonable way to describe the limit. At level 70 12.6 spell hit rating or 15.77 hit rating will give you +1% hit chance. You should be able to do the math to get the appropriate hit rating for each class.

Ah, my bad then, I remember reading that Precision is enough for paladins to reach PvP cap. :)
