Holy priests need not apply?

Talking to a guild mate today, I was informed that rolling holy on my priest was apparently a mistake. She said he's been talking to raiding guilds, and that everyone wants shadow priests, and shaman/pally healers not holy priests.
I enjoy healing on my priest, but is this true? I was hoping to apply to a raiding guild once my priest had decent gear and stats since my small guild doesn't do end-game.
I see people looking for healers constantly over trade and general, but it never dawned on me that perhaps they're looking for "other" healers and not necessarily priests. Any thoughts on this? or am I just being fed a line of you know what... When did holy priests become a non-desirable healer in raids?

Hmm I see, so maybe what she meant to say is that there really isn't room for more holy priests in raid guilds, not that we're useless. I was just a little surprised she made it sound like holy priests were the bottom of the barrel as far as healing, which to me just seems outrageous.
Thanks for clearing that up, I think I would rather stay holy and not see much end-game for now than go shadow simply for a raid spot. I enjoy healing a great deal, and suppose there will always be 5-mans and heroics to take care of anyway :)

one of the big things is that stacking priests won't add more buffs.
paladins and shaman on the other hand can give multiple buffs to the raid.
priests are in no way not needed but as said before you only need in Imp DS priest and CoH builds aren't
necessary
in early raids until you start having massive raid wide dmg.
(note i didn't say not good but they aren't needed nearly as much as they are in later raids)

My priest outheals every class of every raid I've ever been on ( we are in TK now ). Need not apply? You need not want to be in a guild that says such blasphemous things. If they want gimped hybrid healers, let 'em have 'em. I outheal by over 30% EVERY raid no matter who is in it, and with more effiency ( the numbers don't lie ). Guildies, PuG's, joint guild runs, whatever. Only person that has ever come close is a shaman in the guild, and he is damn good ( we are usually neck and neck ). Most hybrids don't have the skills needed to keep up with the higher level content, and would be around to provide their buffs regardless of role.
I wouldn't worry about your viability, I would worry about your choice in guild.

Circle of Healing is overpowered in the hands of someone who manages their manage efficiently and has no inhibition about potting on cooldown. Any raid leader that writes this off probably doesn't know what their doing to begin with.

Yes, your friend is entirely wrong. In Black Temple and Hyjal, holy priests are essential and most guilds will take two or even three. In Sunwell, the shaman catches up as a healer - though shamans are still well represented in BT/MH too.
Paladins are great in tier 4 and to some extent tier 5 content. In BT/MH, though, they are in the raid only for blessings (that's not meant to be harsh, just that other healers can do their healing job better). Now that priest regen has been buffed and more gear with spirit is available, you will find that a tier 4 geared priest is better than a tier 5 geared paladin, in general. You will generally find two holy paladins and either a ret or prot in end game raiding, compared to the usual 4 or 5 priests.
Most guilds only use one resto druid.
When you talk about shamans, remember that five shamans give the absolute maximum buffs - if you're bringing them in mainly for buffing, then one of these will be enhancement. So really, four resto shamans is the maximum feasible.
Oh, and holy priests are perhaps the most skill dependent healer (perhaps resto druids above a certain level). So if you're a really good player, the raid spot is exceptionally easy to find - whereas any old paladin or shaman can heal BT, so you've got nothing special to claim your regular raid spot.

My guild is actually looking for more priests, both shadow and holy. We raid T5 content casually (3 days a week) and have found a distinct lack of decent priests on our server.
We have 2 full time raiding priests, one IDS (me) and the other CoH. We are a small guild so have problems getting enough (good) healers online. We have an army of holy palas and resto shamans and druids, but still, without both priests in our raid there are way too many wipes. I have even been called into raid for one bossfight just because they needed both priests to make it work!
Anyone who says that there is a limit to how many priests can be taken by a guild is mistaken. The big guilds will often have 4 or more holy priests
plus
shadow priests. This ensures that there are enough players online to make the raids work.
You may only require 1 priest in raid to get the maximum of priest buffs per raid but, as stated above, CoH is an amazing heal and is extremely useful from T5 content upwards. Most T6 guilds on my server take a minimum of 3 holy priests in to BT/MH/SWP in order to get the best healing for all bossfights.
As priests are such versatile healers we can be used for tank healing and raid healing without any need to significantly change anything. All healing classes have their uses and are situationally brilliant. It must be said, however, that palas will rarely be put on anything apart from single target healing, and shamans will most commonly be put on raid healing. Druids have very powerful heals and hots and are probably the next most versatile, but priests are the most chosen class to be moved between roles.
With the resources available to us we can cover the role of a dead raid healer or switch to tank healing without having to seriously rethink our healing tactics or worry about our mana pool being seriously drained by the new role. How many other classes can say that?
