As much as you will be helpful healing a large group for maximum utility (you are at your best doing this) dont disregard your solo abilities.
In defense of a flag in AB and EoTS you can be very effective due to the time it will take to kill you.
Don't get me wrong, you will get dropped after a while (unless its a rogue attacking you, unlucky sneaky shoes, you best just sprint off!), but you will be able to inform the rest of your team about what and how many are attacking you and hold them up for long enough for the cavalry to arrive.
In WSG you can make a passable flag runner with Earthbind and Grounding tot's dropped, Earthshield up and instant cast Ghostwolf for the getaway.
In AV the 'stand at the back and spam Chain Heal' rule still applies however your abilities to slow down large groups and defend flags can still be put to good use.
The main thing to remember is that your heals are your main tool, you can out heal a good deal of dps and force those Ally oppo's to waste time, effort and mana on you whilst your team (hopefully) gets the job done.
Keep those tot's dropped, dont worry about dying, communicate with your team and enjoy seeing yourself at the top of the healing table.
Have fun mate, its a great class to play.
Oh yeah, avoid Mages like the plague.

Depends on your faction. If your Ally I would actually say that as a Resto Shaman your chain heals would be of much better use on defence. Drop earthbind and magma totems a little way on the bridge. Stand back and chain heal like a madman. On horde I would suggest going offence and pick a bunker. The reason I suggest a bunker is that Ally like to backcap those bunkers on the way back to DB, at least in my battlegroup.
P.S. I say magma on the bridge because it will pull them pesky rogues outta stealth. <grumble D@#$ ROGUES grumble>
