It by itself is largely just for ease of identifying nodes as you fly by (knowing something is felweed rather than say golden sansam is a huge help). What makes it REALLY useful is when you use an addon like routes to connect the nodes together into a literal "farming route" which can increase one's efficiency quite a bit, especially in areas where it isn't immediately apparent as to how you should go about farming.

I mean, I have Cartographer, and frankly I can't see any reason to have it. I can't see anything on the map, and the minimap is full of symbols and such.
The map shows all the mining/herbalism nodes you've visited (assuming you have Cartographer: herbalism or Cartographer: mining installed respectively), as well as party members + guild members. What exactly is it you want Cartographer to do? I mean, there must have been a reason you downloaded and installed Cartographer in the first place, surely?

I use GatherMate. It is just like Gatherer but uses less memory. I also switched to Cartographer3, I think it is alot better than the original. I also added Handynotes to track vendors, ect on my map.
