i loved my owl when i was lvling :) first off, 1% of people use them, so i was relatively unique. secondly, screech REALLY helps when facing multiple targets, enough so that i'd shoot up to 4 multi-shots and they'd still be targetting my baby birdie. then i got a gorilla as well. just for kicks. thunderstomp is great fun, and they've got some pretty good stam, so multi-mob grinding again was considerably easier. i only got a cat when i hit 60 and the winterspring cat i wanted was available. so purrrty.
as for IAotH, i chose that over ET. you can always slap on some "of stamina" gear if you find yourself dying a lot, especially while leveling, but that +15% speed increase is just lovely, seeing as how it's one of our only ways of pushing out a bit more dps.
Bestial swiftness is total win, especially when you're faced with runners. just reduces the chances of them running into other mobs, which always helps. Also, having your pet NOT fade away when you AotC is kinda nice.
I loved my hunter mainly because i was able to tear through 5-6 mobs at a time, and because of the almost-nonexistent downtime. i knew i made the right choice by rolling a hunter when i took down a lvl 56 rarespawn, 2 lvl 58 elite patrols, and an extra add or two in WPL's undead town. i was lvl 56 :)

I'll bite. :)
Background: Strictly PvE Hunter, have leveled three characters to 70 (Draenei Hunter and Priest, Dwarf Hunter). 41/20/0 or 43/0/18 is my usual spec.
Talents:
IAotH > Endurance Training
: The Quick Shots is much more helpful to my DPS than the extra HP is to my survivability. The only downside is that it could proc at a time that messes up your rotation. Once Auto Shot clipping is removed in 3.0, I will have no qualms with IAotH, aside from the fact that I lose all 5/5 of its benefits when I use AotV. :p
Bestial Swiftness
: Given that I always play with a Dashing/Diving pet, Bestial Swiftness always seemed a little
meh
. Taking it is nowhere near as "lolfail" as other talents, but I just find the other options in my build more appealing given that it only works outdoors. Now, if it switched places with a Tier 2 talent (like an improved Improved Aspect of the Monkey or Thick Hide), I would take it in a heartbeat over 1/5 Endurance Training, lol.
Pets:
Leveling with an Owl/Bat/Carrion Bird
: My preference when it comes to choosing these flappy companions: Bat >> Owl > Carrion Bird. This is very subjective and weak at best but here's my reasoning:
All three have Screech and Dive (big pluses).
Only significant difference between Bats and Owls is that Owls cannot learn Bite, hurting their DPS a little.
Meanwhile, Carrion Birds can learn Bite but have bonus% armor instead of bonus% damage.
Like I said, weak, heh. I'll almost always take a DPS pet over a Tank pet though, leveling goes so much quicker when the pet is cranking out
that
much more damage. The difference for me between my bat and my cat wasn't that noticeable, but I could see some noteworthy disparity between my vulture and my cat.
Leveling with a Gorilla
: Never tried it, but am interested to see people's takes on it. With a picky diet of fungus and fruit, no focus dump, no Dash, and a special ability with a 1-min. cooldown and last rank was level 60, they seem very lackluster to me.
My favorite one-sentence description may be Blizzard's first line on the Hunter page:
Hunters are vicious damage dealers.
No other page puts it as simply or pointedly. :) Despite the stifling prejudice toward Hunters, I continue to enjoy my character because of my big honkin' bag o' tricks (crowd control out the wazoo, threat management, and sharp, "vicious" projectiles) and of course, my ever-
loyal
pets.

I've leveled several characters to 70, the most recent being my BM hunter.
1. I'd take ET over IAotH, mostly because I'm so close to pulling aggro off my pet anyhow that the little bit more dps I'm getting is going to be wasted in many situations, maybe if I ran more instances it'd come out on top. For leveling just doesn't seem to be worth it, the bonus health from ET comes in quite handy in pvp situations too.
2. I've always used Cats for leveling as the added DPS helps them hold aggro quite a bit. Dash also relieves me of the need to spend a point on Bestial Swiftness. I've messed with an Owl for helping guildies run lower lvl instances though, the aoe screech works nice for holding aggro during mend pet. Hopefully all this will be solved come 3.0 anyhow.
3. Putting a pet on aggressive is NOT always a bad thing, there are times in Battlegrounds when having a pet on aggressive near a flag will help prevent it from capping, or when a stealthed character passes close enough for the pet to see him/her the pet will destealth them for you. Or sitting the pet near a spawn point on a quest and putting him on aggressive so he automatically attacks the mobs as they spawn.
None of these make you feel any better however when you've left your pet on aggressive and head into a goblin town or the Ilse of Quel'Danas and your pet nets your a nice little repair bill. The moral is pay attention to what you're doing, know when and how to manage your pet. Turning off growl during a BG makes sense, but don't forget to turn it back on when you're done and back to grinding, etc.
4. Spirit Bond, /sigh. At least it seems a bit more useful come 3.0, maybe there will actually be a place for it in a halfway decent build, I still haven't found the spare points for it though.
Also I like the name When Nature Calls, I was also thinking Hunters Gone Wild would be nice though, good luck assembling all the info.
