1: Is Moonkin (balance) a viable 2v2 Arena spec? I prefer all the way to the Treants talent if I'm going that route, as in PvP they seem to help me tremendously. I have not used them in arena yet, as I'm mostly gearing up through playing PvP right now.
It's not great in 2v2, hence them being rare. I don't think you'd find any at all at top ratings (2100+), which says it all really. I may be wrong on this, but i've never heard of them doing amazingly well in 2v2.
The main problems you will face are:
- hardly any crits on Wrath or Starfires, severely limiting burst DPS which would help a lot (or making burst damage luck based anyways). There are some classes that can get reliable crit %s from pvp gear (ferals can get ~45%, and i know rogues and warriors can get close to 40%), but casters can't really get enough to still have a high % after resilience is taken into account (~ subtract 12%).
- low survivability. Yes you can heal and yes you have high armor, but double DPS teams will still be able to nuke you down very very fast, before you can even get any of your half-powered HoTs onto yourself.
2: What Gear should I get? Should I go with the Resto gear, as I will need to do quite a bit of healing during arena, or should I get the Balance gear set, and hope it has enough stats that I can heal well when needed? If I can do enough support spell dmg with the Resto set, I would prefer to get it in case I end up not liking Moonkin for arena and go Resto. I would prefer Feral out of all, but I just don't feel it has near the utility of either Balance or Resto specs.
What I'm afraid of is getting stuck healing mostly, even though I'll be spec'd to do some damage also, that that I'll be gimping myself by getting Balance gear.
I've heard of folks wearing the entire Resto PvP set or Arena set, but being "Restokin" (I'm not sure what the build for this is, I'm going to search that next). I have a feeling the Restokin build will not give me my Treants, however, and I feel in 2v2 they're a big surprise advantage since I'm teamed with a Rogue. I plan on the Rogue opening on a target, me throwing the Treants on the same target, and either doing dmg on that target or CC'ing the other one while the trees and Rogue take out the main target.
Restokin is an extremely fun spec to play. Some matches you will do nothing but heal and in others you can mainly DPS. That in a nutshell is the strength of the spec ofc. In the games where you spend the whole time healing, you would have failed if Moonkin DPS was your only option.
The spec is this:

To get the general idea, watch:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DHK51P75wYLooks fun, no? :-) He plays with a hunter in these clips. ShS rogue is the other viable option.

As a side note, bear in mind that patch 3.0 is not far away (some of the data is already coming through the background downloader i believe), and patch 3.0 will change Balance/Resto synergy hugely (making it even more powerful than it currently is). Ferals are also a getting reasonable utility via debuffs like Infected Wounds. I think Feral + Mutilate rogue will be a very powerful 2v2 comp in 3.0.
