I run as IDS as one of 2 active priests in my guild, the other being CoH.
In the beginning I was not as well geared and struggled to keep up with him. Now I have 1950 +heal and 200mp5 while casting, I am equally geared and generally outdo him on the meters for single target healing. When it comes to raid wide healing though, I get pwned.
After all how can you compare a
450 mana spell that heals 5 raid members with a
1.2k mana spell that only heals your party? Renewing and PoMing the rest of the raid still wont make up that kind of difference if it is spammed on the mele group or bunched up casters.
That is just between 2 priests though. We both get beaten by the 2.1k healing resto druid for single target healing (damn treecows).
The thing about CoH priests is that they are more versatile than IDS priests.
Yes, IDS priests provide a nice raid buff that all casters/healers like as (even if they don't have any spirit) it will boost their spell damage/healing a little bit. CoH priests, however, can single target heal
or raid heal effectively. They can even switch roles mid fight without suffering.
The mana regeneration issue is not as big as people will think between the 2 specs. If you check you should find that the only difference in the Disc talents is whether or not DS and IDS are actually taken (providing you're following cookie cutters). So a
20/41/0 priest should have the same kind of mana efficiency as a
23/38/0 priest in all honesty.
I would be interested to know just how much your guildie knows about priests. Is he a priest raid healer himself or is he one of these "I had a priest once" players who has read one post somewhere and thinks they know all about a class from it?
