Download / upgrade account? Or is going to GameStop, etc., required?

With the release date of WotLK announced, and a new, ~900MB bundle of data already downloaded, I find myself wondering if I'll be able to skip the pre-order and lines at my local GameStop, and just download WotLK, and upgrade my accounts.
I suppose one can take the view that by requiring a trip to the store, Blizzard supports the GameStops, etc., of the world, and helps keep them in business. I can also see the other side, which would say that the packaging required, the gas used in the trip to the store, the electricity to keep the lights on at midnight are all very wasteful.
I would very much like to skip the trip to the store. So, anyone happen to know if the download option will be available?
I've looked at the FAQs, and I don't see this answered, though I have a history of being blind. :)

I dont think you'll find this available as a download purchase - most sites that offer WoW as a download purchase still dont have Burning Crusade available.
Yet you can do it straight though the official WoW website o.0
I upgraded + downloaded three WoW + TBC accounts through the official website, they sent the CD keys as emails. I'd assume they'll do similar too for WotLK after a few weeks of launch at the least.

Right. I looked at this last night. I presume that the same will hold for WotLK: Some time after initial release they'll make this option available, but specifically NOT for initial release so they keep their downstream brick & mortar distribution channels open.
Grr. What a waste if this is true. Any one seen any blue posts about this?

The BitTorrent distribution method built into Blizzard's patch mechanism should take care of the bandwidth problem. This is a decision Blizzard can make. I'm just trying to figure out what they've decided.
