I have enjoyed playing pally as retri - am now looking to start new one going Protection as I want to try a few instances.
...
Currently level 12.
I tend to disagree, leveling as prot is not as bad as it seems, what you want to recall is that for leveling in Azaroth:
DEF>STA>STR>INT>what not
spirit is worthless for paladin, honestly, worthless
you can't AoE casters down
get some rare mail items, with Gnomergen's main quest legging your highest priority since you won't upgrade them untill late 30s
at Azaroth:
try to work mobs 2-3 levels below you, cons', but not nonstop, just to keep damage to reasnable level, judge you're current target with wisdom, and just auto attack with righteousness on
and alway carry 2-3 stacks of the best water you can buy and try to keep first aid maximized, will save you some downtime
once you hit outland, you should replace strength with spell damage (look for items with the suffix - crusader, they are perfect)
hope its short enough, and might be helpful
P.S
at 31-35 you WILL take reckoning since before 70th it's our best tool at soloing and burst threat
at these levels, a weapon slower then 2.2secs will not do

If you're level 12, you haven't "leveled as ret". You cannot honestly have any experience with any spec having only played for what, 2 hours, and with only allocating 2 talent points?
You aren't ret OR prot at the moment.

Does everyone here realize that attributes and talents are covered in the FAQ?

Also looking at the talent and weapon suggestion I though (maybe incorrectly -if so then I am sorry) that it was really directed towards high level Paladins.

Not directed at high levels mate.
