Prot works just fine on the PTR right now for questing. As fast as a mage? Of course not. But it won't be as painful as it currently is on live to kill single mobs by a long shot.
And of course, there's always the option of grabbing a 2H sometime in the next few weeks and going Ret until 75, then re-equipping the sword and shield with SotR. The re-gearing of tanking plate gives you plenty of strength to work with in a Ret build.
Play what you enjoy.

Does anyone else feel wary of progressing through the expansion without being able to fully experience it unless you tag along with groups of people who are questing anyway? Is anyone else sad that it's pretty rough to grind stuff out as a Protadin if you don't want to AoE everything over and over again? Does anyone want to scream at me for putting up my sword and shield? Most importantly, other than the opinionated aspects of my post (i.e., leveling with a Mage will just in the end be much nicer than leveling with a Prot Paladin, considering I want to be able to quest and do everything singly, and without the pain of long, boring fights), am I completely wrong that soloing stuff with a Prot Paladin will be annoying?Switching to ret may be about the only way you will be able to get the majority of quests done in any decent amount of time. With several guildmates on the beta, I have been told questing will be much more efficient in leveling to 80 that grinding instances. 20k to 40k in experience for each quest turn in, some requiring no more than 10 minutes to kill x number of some creature. If you don't have a decent ret set, well you still have 2 months to put together a set. I don't know if you love/hate bg's but the S2 weapon and a few S2 "scaled" pieces will go a long way. You appear to be geared enough for heroics/kara so farm up some badges for an item or 2, as the badges will be useless in the WotLK anyways. If 40k+ honor or 100+ badges seems too much of a head ache than you could grab the
Crusader's Scaled Battlegear
set. It's purchasable with gold as long you are honored with the different factions. There are also a few 2H weapons you can buy from
vendors
or from the
AH
that are pretty nice.
