paladins can heal any instance to my knowledge...
you don't really need to be holy to heal in pre-70 instances, however, if you're grouping with your friend all the time, then it would be a viable option
maybe a shockadin build-up would be nice to help out your friend in questing
methinks something like
this

I've been away from WoW for a year now and when I return I intend to be making my 44 pally alt my main.
I had a priest and healing was the reason I played the game. I want to be a healer on my pally but is that impossible pre-70 raiding? My warrior friend who I will be levelling with, tells me that pallies can main heal 5mans with no help. Is this true? Can I get to 70 with a holy build, main healing in instances? What would the best build be for me if I want to heal, be an efficient and productive group member, and back up my warrior friend when we're questing with each other?
Is this a viable option, or would I be wasting my time and the effort of others who take the risk of letting me be the main healer in my group?
Yes you can have a holy build up to level 70. Holy paladin won't be slow in leveling.
Yes Paladin can be solo healing in 5 man lv 70 instance. Even in some Heroics. (for those heroics paladin cannot solo-heal, priest can't do it either. You will need 2 heals)
To heal, become an efficient and a productiove member of the group, Holy is the only way to go! Your warrior friend can never die as long as you do it properly.
I recommend you my holy build:

Well there is some drawback on paladin heals. He/she cannot cast an instant heal, cannot cast shield which absorbs damage and he/she doesn't have mass healing spells. I can only say, Paladin and Priest has their own style of healing.
