aye, ive never meet an enchanter who have been as greedy as these fellas. and if an enchanter asks if he can keep the shards for lvling purposes we generally let him/her have them.

If you roll on the item when it drops or roll for the shard at the end, what does it matter? You are still rolling at some point. The bonus is that if I win at the end, I can sell the shard, if you win, you get it for leveling. If I win the item roll, I can sell it for a few gold, but you still get nothing out of it.

Because if you win at the end, you sell it back to us.

In runs with my guild alliance, we've made a policy that the enchanter takes a shard, and then the whole group (chanter included) rolls on the remaining shards (so, s/he's guaranteed one, and has a chance at another one). And most of us will pass on shards if we already got loot.
When I'm on my enchanter, I don't really think about shards except keeping *those* shards separate from *my* shards. (Don't ever DE trash in an instance pug, god forbid you get a shard off some random green, people freak out on you.) I usually hold on to the items to the end, and DE them all in one go once the final boss has been looted.
Other enchanters? Well, I wouldn't protest a pug enchanter wanting the same arrangement as our alliance chanters. I *would* protest a chanter thinking he deserved all the shards-- we all worked for the gear. They could be someone else's repair money.
Essentially, we let the enchanter take the gear *now* with the expectation that it'll be split up fairly *later*. Obviously sharding increases the value -- and for that I've certainly had people try to tip my chanter for it (i refuse). I'd probably be willing to pay a set a mount for shards, if it were reasonable (say, some portion of the vendor cost of the item) and agreed on beforehand.
Also on my enchanter, I link my skills pane at the end of the run. Some people have the mats for something already (or enough random greens to get them) and want something done right there. So there's skill points. There's also the occasional person who wants to know if s/he can trade the shard for my mats. There's shards. ;)

The DE is a service, plain and simple, just like prospecting. There is way to many items that an enchanter gets over time to DE.
And like all services, some people want to be paid, others, like me, don't mind crafting, smelting, enchanting, etc for free given that it doesn't cost my mats.
Thank god I have a pocket enchanter so I never have to go through this drama.

Wow, this discussion should be over, period. Some (many) of you seem to have missed the fact that (s)he stated
everyone
rolls for greed, then (s)he DE's whatever (s)he ends up winning. So with that in mind, the answer (which yes has already been stated by several) is this simple:
Whatever
any
person decides to do with an item after they win a roll is none of anyone's business. It matters nothing if they are an enchanter or not. If they win the roll that everyone got a chance to roll on, they can vendor it, trash it, shard it, or let it sit in their bank until WoW is no more. Just because they can do one more thing with it than you, does not mean you all of a sudden have some inexplicable right to their mats.
Anyways, as long as everyone that wants to roll gets to roll, it's silly to think there should be any steps after that. Nuff said.

I haven't read all posts above, but here's the deal in my mind:
I'm not an enchanter, I am a herbalist.
I helped you get those items that you DE'd. I helped dps/heal in that instance. I passed on the loot that I could've otherwise vendored...
If I let you have the shard, are you going to give me free enchants? No, I will still have to buy my own shards for my enchants, AND pay the enchanter a tip.
Conversely, if I do not take that herb and nobody else is a herbalist what happens? Nothing. Nobody can benefit at all.
You say that enchanters need the mats to level... When you get the mats required though, do you hand out free enchants to anyone in Dalaran? No, you make us pay for you to use your mats. Which is fine... but not if you expect us to all pass on the shards so you can keep them all. You already profit from enchanting from the tips you make.
I'm an alchemist, I make potions for people every day, and never expect a tip, unless it required me to do a bit of travelling (e.g. get the mats from Orgrimmar, then go to Shattrath to use the Alchemy Lab, and back to Org to give them the flask or mercurial stone). If you need me to use my herbs to make the item, I expect payment. If you provide them, I give them free.
A lot of people don't see that this should be the same with their profession because my flasks/elixirs/potions don't last as long. They don't see the need to tip or be charged for me to make items. Yet they charge me to cut gems, enchant gear, craft items, etc (another gripe I have, but that's for another rant at another time). That charge to enchant, cut or craft is the money you make from your profession. As an Enchanter you get that fee.
As a herbalist I don't. The only money I make as a herbalist is selling those herbs. It takes up an extra profession, therefore I shouldn't have to give you herbs that I pick that would otherwise go to waste. If disenchanting were seperate from enchanting, I would see a reason to give you those shards and let you roll need on items that people didn't need.

The funny thing is that at least before 3.0.8 came out and the shards rose in price a little bit, the shards were going for about 8g a piece. Thing is many blue armor pieces/weapons vendored for about as much or sometimes more. So you don't wanna disenchant the item for the group? Fine, I'll roll greed, maybe win it, vendor it and buy myself a shard off the AH.
Thankfully most enchanters I run marathon heroics with are fine with disenchanting everything and spreading the shards out equally. They normally end up with 5-6 blue shards and often a couple epic shards after a few instances since most of my groups need nothing out of heroics except money and emblems.

I dont understand why you wouldnt wanna DE items and allow everyone that wants to roll on the shards roll. Yes you have stated need/greed on unwanted items but most enchanters will head straight to the AH and sell the abyss shards for 120 to 150 gold apiece, or we can greed roll and sell a epic iten for 10 to 15 gold, Please tell me how this helps anyone but the enchanter that wouldnt have the shard in the first place without the help of others. You chose enchanting as a profession and as a part of that profession people are gonna expect you to de items, thats just the way its always been. If you dont wanna provide you skills to the rest of the group keep your mouth shut and wait till your out of the group and DE the items then.............
