Shadowburn for affliction?

I've recently leveled my warlock to 80 and have always been an affliction lock. I've glyphed for CoA, Immo, SiLi and researched the optimal roation and spec, however I have a question about whether it is worth speccing for Shadowburn.
Now they have changed the summoning spell to require 1 soul shard for everybody, and drain soul is used to finish off any mob/boss with less than 25% health I find that my soul shards are just not getting used and are building up until I am forced to destroy them.
Would it be worth sparing a point for shadowburn and using it instead of a shadow bolt when dots are about to expire, but haven't yet... for example sometimes when I've applied all my dots but Haunt is still on cd for another second or so, rather than casting a shadow bolt (which may be interrupted or mean my Haunt debuff drops off during the travel from me to boss) would it be better to cast a shadowburn?

not really worth it no. talent points are tight at this point in an affliction build and you can't really spare one point for something unless it brings an increase in DPS.
shadowburn is nice for PvP but doesn't do enough to be worth including in a PvE build.

I save all my SS for Soul Fire casts.
I'm just curious, when is it a good time to cast Soul Fire as affliction?
This is how I would fit
Shadowburn
into my build.
Would I be missing any important talents by including it? An alternative build would remove a point from Amplify Curse and Dark Pact and place them in the increased range for destro and afflic spells accordingly (I tend to spec for Dark Pact out of habit, though don't use it except when farming).
You're probably right that it might not be worth the GCD most of the time, but how about during a fight with lots of movement? can cast it on the move if all of the instant dots are already applied? Surely it would be better to be able to cast something than to wait?

well, i prefer gelf's build, of the two. it's a decent build.
if you think you'll use it then you should take shadowburn. it's a long way down my personal list of priorities but i've got to admit that you're not missing anything very important in your build.
i would suggest, though, that you use it like nailbunny describes. don't try to fit it into a rotation no matter how many shards you have. it will only increase your output if you use it at times when you wouldn't ordinarily be casting anything else - like moving or to finish trash off etc.

One problem with
Shadowburn
that hasn't been mentioned yet is that it only has a 20 yard range, which is closer than you'd normally be standing to your target as caster DPS and limits your ability to use it during movement phases of boss fights.

I really like gelf's build. It's not entirely built for maximum DPS, but it is a highly balanced build.
It's very
well rounded
: it has a good PvP utility, with Demonic Circle, you can start blasting away if your DoTs won't just cut it. But it has a considerable raiding utility as well. This build doesn't particularly specialize as much as FG/Ember would, but has far more utility. If someone can master the playstyle of it, if can turn out to be a decent hybrid build.
not sure what build you were looking at but it would make a terrible PvP build. it's purely a raid build and isn't missing any major dps notes.
edit: that was my 1337 post ^_^

After a bit of playing around with builds I have settled on this spec which takes Shadowburn and Destructive reach to slightly lessen the range difference between Shadowburn (20yd to 24yd) and the rest of my spells.
new shadowburn/affliction build
I don't include Shadowburn in my normal rotation, but it is a nice instant to be able to throw around when nothing else needs to be cast.
Anything I have missed or overlooked?

I'd save shadowburn is pretty useless in S5.
It was mainly used for UA/Spriest ,while we chain a full dots (UA,Curse,Corr,SiLi) and SW:P, Devo Plague ,SW:D ,MB and Shadowburn.

Molten core is a dps increase even when immolate is the only spell to benefit from it. Visit elitist jerks to check out the maths behind the choice.
