When going Shadow, Priests are very similar to Affliction warlocks, if you've ever played one. You can imagine Mind Blast as being an effective Shadow Bolt with a cooldown, and having DoTs be an important part of your dps.
While you can do the traditional "drain tanking" with Vampiric Embrace, it's unnecessary due to the Shield and Shadowform's own damage reduction.
If you ever do consider healing, you'll find that the priest can't be compared to anything since it does so much with so many different tools to use.
But enough talk, just try it out and you'll get the idea.

Not much I can add to it, other than how nice it is for leveling as shadow in Azeroth, and still being more than a match for healing any 5-man group.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, a spriest's Mind Flay is the cheapest spell per damage in the game. And given that we can also heal ourselves, we aren't as squishy as say a mage.

Well tbh, the first 40 levels are VERY slow for a priest, post-40 leveling ease and survivability increases a bit :)

once you hit like lvl 60 and can reach some of the key talents in the discipline talent tree such as rapture, borrowed time and penance, throw 3 talent points into spirit tap in the shadow tree and its a pretty good healing/leveling build as you never run out of mana and can heal dungeons more effectively than shadow, if your into healing as well and not wanting to lvl as holy.
Even though I have hardly any experience as discipline, I agree that would probably be the best course (something I wish I would have done). Once I hit the Outlands, Hellfire Peninsula was the only area I could heal it's dungons as shadow, but a discipline build would have allowed me to heal and solo easier than switching to holy.
