If his armory said he had 541 and he was crit, chances are he was farming or doing something else beforehand and forgot to switch back into full tanking gear. Archavon does not have any abilities that increases his crit or lower your defense. And yea, the spec would help.

Well, as for his spec...
1) 1 point in BoK is useless. If you plan on taking it, you need to go the full amount. This is being taken care of in 3.1 however.
2) 2/2 in DG, meh, though I guess he is probably used to only OT'ing so it is probably ok
3) No 1-H specialization. It increases *all* damage increasing your dps/tps by a lot.
4) 1/2 in JotJ, I don't really see the point in even bothering to spec into it if you don't take both points.
5) 2/2 in Vindication. Absolute trash
6) 2/2 in Eye for an Eye. This is the winnar. You shouldn't be getting crit at all by physical attacks (unless there is a gimmick buff or debuff). And mob spells cannot crit. There is absolutely no reason for any tank to take this. He should have just moved 1 point over to finish out Crusade and stuck the other point somewhere else.
7) Imp Judgements and HotC, kind of debatable depending on how often you run with a Ret. The 2nd in Imp Judgements could go somewhere else, but it helps out solo'ing more than anything.

He needs to throw points into Guarded by the light and one handed weapon spec.

He's gone to deep into ret, you can't reach your fullest tanking potential with that build. Why any pally tank would think to use seal of command is beyond me
