recount has a more proven track record and has gained an excellent reputation because of it's frequent updates and excellent depth of information.
of the two violation is the less trustworthy source for damage breakdowns.
if you want to test this properly then the best idea would be to upload a combat log to WWS and see which of the two addons is closest. WWS has a couple of it's own issues (doomgaurds >.<) but it's information is very precise. the closest to WWS will generally be the better.
if you want me to save you the time it's recount.

i have noticed the same problem with both mine and my friends warlock. On mine im constantly critting 2-3k (im only 64 atm) but according to recount im hitting around 400 DPS o,O
My friend is pretty good geared, mostly 80 epics and according to recount he is only hitting around 1k dps...

gear != skill
crits != dps
generally recount is very solid. you should look elsewhere for the solution to your issues.

Don't rely on DPS, rely on damage dealt.
If you deal 10k damage over 5 seconds, but then die, you will appear to have ~2k DPS. By comparison, someone who survived the entire fight might have done 100k damage, but only 1.5k DPS.
DPS values are arbitrarily altered because DoTs extends the time that you are doing DPS, which means if you have to move you're still doing damage but your DPS cratered. By comparison, in most cases where movement is a factor, the cut off for calculating DPS is shorter than a DoT but longer than a couple nukes, so specs built around nukes appear to have higher DPS, but can have lower total damage output.
This is an issue I experience with some of the DPS in my guild (that DPS is the be-all end-all stat for determining the relative performance of players), and it is head-desk frustrating trying to get people to understand it. At one point we flat out told an individual that our guild relies on damage dealt, not DPS (after she boasted her DPS was approaching one of our top damage dealers) and her response was 'Oh, I don't look at the damage output, it depresses me.' Yeah, that was a head-desk moment.

while that's all true, dps is as close as we can get to an objective value.
if someone comes to a forum like this and says " i did 50% of the damage in a heroic" or "i did 100k damage on loken" well that doesn't tell us anything. the value of the damage they did is subject to factors that we don't know like, "is that person grouping with retarded chimps?"
DPS isn't perfect but it's as good as we have to objectively determining someone's ability.
yes, in game (and away from these fora), damage done is much more important but high dps with low output can tell you a lot so it oughtn't be ignored either.

While, as you say, there are too many factors that go into damage dealt to be used as a tool to improve your performance, that doesn't seem to have been the goal of the original post. He wanted to know what tool people used to compare performance inside the game, in situations where all those factors would be covered and equal.
We didn't need an objective tool for determining his ability, because he wasn't asking us to judge his ability, only why there is such a discrepancy between two different reporting mods. That was covered in one way by individuals saying that Recount is the superior parsing tool, while I covered the other end by showing there is a much more accurate value (even when using Recount) that can be used at the end of a particular event - whether it's a boss fight or an entire instance.
