Indeed. Try as I might to educate people on the mechanics of this class, attempting to fully explain how and why we do what we do, the only responses I ever get are, "Play a real class you nub" or "Lol, <instert spec> isn't <insert role>, it can only <insert role>."
The majority of players believe the following about the DK specs:
Blood - Leveling and Pvp only
Frost - Tank only
Unholy - Only dps
I've tanked, dps'd and pvp'd as all the specs. If used correctly, they are all viable for everything.
The general populous needs to stop thinking that Hero Class means Super Class.
Another thing that ticks me off about players is that when I attempt to PuG a raid is the response "Lol, we have enough DKs".

The main reason why people think that DKs aren't good for tanking in the fact that we don't have the "insta-threat" that the other classes have. Death-Grip is
not
a taunt btw. DK threat builds up over time, D&D is not an instant 30k threat, it starts off at about 5k and goes up the more it ticks. Rune Strike adds about 3-5k.
Many dps do not know this. So the tank pulls, and the dps charge in... then get two shotted. I see this problem especially with hunters, mages, and rogues. Whenever that happens, its a quick re-target and Dark Command. Death Grip is useful, but it doesn't add any threat, just gives you 3 secs of taking the hits and time to build more threat.
There are too many people who don't understand the mechanics of this class, or are too stubborn to realize that DKs are real tanks and real dps... we just do it a little differently.
I switched to a DK from a rogue. Main reason: PvE survivability. And the mechanics are more fun.

Only noob tanks use Death Grip at start... Decent tanks use DnD first and death grip the casters or skulled one.

all DKs will have an instant aoe agro grab with the coming change to blood boil but i don't have any problems in that department currently as a frost tank.
i think that advice to DPS would be to wait until you see DnD on the floor, like you might currently start DPSing only when your pally tank drops consecrate. i use DnD on any group larger than 2 mobs. when there's 2 mobs the tank should mark a skull which you can attack as soon as they do, if they don't then it's their fault if you pull.

As an Unholy DK tank, i have heard the "you must be frost to tank" line a few times. But once people actually see me in action, all the negative comments sort of fade off.
Once i actually got a core set of healers in my friends list that didn't suck, now i don't have any trouble at all. No one ever argues with you when your invite line looks like "tank/healer LFM".
