I like it the way it is now, but then again, it is personal preference.

It doesn't do that for me. Maybe you're hitting enter after you mouseover the Rank 6 one instead of clicking it.
That's a great point. :P
But still, I was just typing and going back to the mouse seems a tad strange to do. More habit than anything else to press enter.
I said this before, they said they didn't want to do that. It could work both ways. I hate having to go back to the mouse especially when they
did
enable the arrow keys, but didn't enable enter.

What Sko pointed out was that the "auto-complete" functionality of the dropdown works exactly like the "auto-complete" functionality of any other search, like your address bar, or Google—it just fills in the text you auto-completed to, and then searches. The ability to click on the links and go directly to those pages is just a bonus. :)

Though Malgayne, you can press the down arrow and choose a selection and press enter and get that selection in most suggest searches. However, when choosing a ranked item by the down arrow the
(rank #)
is left out when the script updates the search field to the selected item, while any other item it works fine.

So, you're saying that Wowhead should design its features around the level of functionality offered by "any other site"? :)

Of course not! But we certainly design our features with the thought in mind that people who are used to using other search engines, like Google, shouldn't have to read an instruction manual to be able to figure out "how we do things at Wowhead". :P
Though Malgayne, you can press the down arrow and choose a selection and press enter and get that selection in most suggest searches. However, when choosing a ranked item by the down arrow the (rank #) is left out when the script updates the search field to the selected item, while any other item it works fine.
This is because the rank # information isn't actually part of the name of the item. The rank information is provided as a courtesy for people who are trying to select items or abilities via the dropdown (just like the Alliance/Horde icons for quests, which obviously can't be typed into the search box). In most cases it doesn't make a difference because of the extended searching (see
here
), but in a best case scenario you'll see the same information as you see currently, and in a worst case scenario you'll get no results at all.
The current functionality is: Clicking the listed item in the dropdown will take you directly to the item (or spell or NPC or quest) listed. Using the arrow keys to scroll down through listed entries will auto-fill the name of that entry in the search box, and press enter—just as though you had searched for that text.

I suppose it's my opinion that if clicking it takes you
directly
to it, and we are allowed to highlight it both by mousing over
and
by using the arrow keys, then there is some expectation of the "activation" of an item in the dropdown behaving consistently.
When the auto-complete/suggest feature was first implemented, I spent a while trying to figure out why the arrows didn't work the same way as clicking. I thought it was a bug in my browser.
