This is simply internet evolution, more specifically, WoW database evolution. The reason most of us are using Wowhead now are because they did things better, cleaner and prettier than all the other database sites out there. Now it's becoming loud and cluttered with ads and banners and skins.
For me, it's time to move on. Other sites have adopted Wowhead's style and flair so it won't be hard to find a replacement. And once the new site becomes popular and starts selling it's space, it will be time to move on again. And thus the cycle of internet life continues.
Best post I've read.

Really? I didn't know you could read. I thought you just knew how to copy and paste.
Seriously? Can you stop trolling? I don't want to have to make you stop.

I work in the advertising industry. I'll give you a little insight on what is going on right now in the industry. I am not talking specifically about wowhead, but rather about all online advertising in general.
The economy is down. One of the first things every company does is re-evaluates their advertising. To most that meant they had to pull their budgets because they are not getting the sale conversion percentages they used to because no one is spending. This means that either they stop advertising, or need to pay lower rates. Both are bad things for sites that rely on advertising revenues.
eCPMs are down 40% over last year in the industry. eCPM is effective cost per 1000 impressions. So if we used to make $1 per 1000 impressions, we are now making $0.60. Expenses have not gone down, and infact most have gone up. Do the math, something has to budge. Either you put MORE ads on the site, or you get creative with your advertising models.
Spend a day and look around the internet, every site is trying something new to try to generate revenue. Saying that "its just a money greedy executive" is not fair. It has nothing to do with profits, infact it has to do with keeping revenues above expenses so you don't have to shut the site down.
Have a look at this:
http://www.quantcast.com/wowhead.com#traffic
Wowhead serves 321 million page views a month. Thats a lot of traffic, and a lot of cost.
Personally if a wowhammer ad (which wowhammer is a good game, its just different) generates revenue to keep this site going for a few more months, what does it matter?
PS: Most MMO players on average have accounts with multiple MMOs

So if it was a full page Aflac ad would anyone be upset?
Really as a site that you get to use for free who cares what they advertise for, I have played alot of MMOs and certainly clicked over to see more about WAR. Look at the worldofwarcraft.com site and tell me if there arent any Ads for other MMOs.
Seriously get over it I want wowhead to make as much money as possible so that they can keep providing me with a service that I use Daily. On top of that the WAR skin is a cool background it wont be there forever and it certainly made me take notice.
So do us all a favor and instead of feeling slapped in the face, take a step back realize how the world works and be happy that you can get all this great info for free.

Here is my opinion on the whole matter. Hell I even e-mailed Wowhead about this a while back and Miyari was the one who responded.
I am not saying getting rid of the ad's but then again some people may think that if Wowhead did this they would be saying, "PAY US OR THE FRONT PAGE WILL LOOK DUMB! BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Even when that wont be the case.
I thought it would be a nice idea if they opened up something along the lines of a donation/subscription system.
For example a user is given the OPTION to give Wowhead $3/$5/$10 (Just random numbers) a month to be a "premium" user. Now what that would be could be anything.
It could always include things like:
No ads on any page
Sneak peak at new tools or site features
Exclusive forum
An icon or colored name/text to show they are a subscriber
I would GLADLY pay Wowhead monthly if I had the option and I am sure a lot of other people would too. I remember Miyari said they were discussing it but I have yet to see even a thing where I can just flat out donate =[
I really love Wowhead and it's community. The site is well put together and is run by some dedicated people and I want to show my support in other ways then telling more people to eat up their bandwidth!

I understand you need to pay the bills and all. I'm also not going to say that I'm offended, or that the add is a "slap in the face" or anything. I've played War, it's a pretty good game though I do prefer WoW.
But-it is odd for such a in-your-face add on a WoW database. And come on.. it's ugly as hell. I don't have a problem with advertising Warhammer but do you really need to have it on the main page?

It's not a decoration, it's an advertisement. Kind of like the one that's running on
Gamespot
right now.
These are how we pay the bills, guys. I prefer them to banner ads—they're more secure, and they hog less CPU power. :)
Are you familiar with the term "Conflict of Interest?"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_of_interest
A conflict of interest occurs when an individual or organization ... has an interest that might compromise their reliability. A conflict of interest exists even if no improper act results from it, and can create an appearance of impropriety that can undermine confidence in the conflicted individual or organization.

I'm sort of indifferent about the add. On one had, yes its a bit too "in your face" and totally goes against Wowhead's general theme of sleekness and utility. On the other, they do need to make money and I don't blame them. Do I personally like it? No, of course not. It makes me wonder as well, wouldn't that add be a conflict of interest? Wouldn't the wowhead team want to promote the playing of Wow and not other online games? Is the wowhead team going to produce a sister site for warhammer?

Guys - just click the add, make wowhead happy, then close the box. Nothing say you have to actually download the trial, or even play the game.. just click it.
If you think that this is bad, wait till Blizzard comes down on all of the mod writers after they start enforcing the new policy of not asking for donations or mod writers charging for their work in making wow a better game....
Actually there is. When you click the link it is a unique link and I am sure they can track how many accounts are created from people who click that link then click on "create an account."

It wouldn't be very productive to have a WoW ad on this site seeing as how there is probably close to 0% of people who come to this site that DONT play WoW.

Idiots. If you don't like WAR, don't click on it. The skin is fine and it makes money to keep wowhead online.
It's that simple.
