They're giving the Retribution tree a major overhaul in 2.3, and assuming they do it right, Pally DPS aughta be a lot more viable. I say, roll the Alliance Pally, spec for Ret, and when 2.3 roll around, see if there is a noticeable difference in your DPS output. If not, look elsewhere.

Yeah, paladin PvP is definitely sad, but that's just because with the exception of geared out prot pallies, the only real viable spec for PvP or PvE is holy.

It sounds like you plan on doing a lot of PvP. If that's the case, I'd suggest against a paladin. If your main concern is 1 vs 1, you're likely going to be disappointed no matter which class you choose, as there will always be at least one other class that can best you.
However, if you're planning on PvE, then pallys are great. Sure, they may not kill things as fast as you're used to, but there's a lot to be said for being virtually unkillable.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily go as far as to say that Holy is bad for farming/soloing either. I certainly wouldn't respec simply to go farm - a Holy paladin in +spelldmg plate can solo efficiently. However, I'd say that yes, you're right -- protection paladins at this moment in time are much more efficient for leveling.
