5.1 Billion
was spend on AIDS research worldwide from 1981-1991. In 1990, 3-3.5 Billion was spent on AIDS healthcare in the US alone. This only scratches the surface of the amount spent on AIDS.
But money isn't everything. For the massive sums spent, the virus only spreads, infecting more people, as it takes the lives of others on a daily basis. This isn't a high risk killer in 1st world nations, but in developing countries it is an epidemic. What can we do to cure it that the best medical minds are hopeless against?
I propose a solution:
For the amount of money spent on HIV and AIDS research, we should be able to outfit an island complete with every anemity man could desire for 15 years. 5 star facilities. The best medicine. The best food. The best atmosphere. The WHO should be able to do a sweeping, worldwide testing for the virus to conclusively identifiy all those with the virus. Anyone who has it, gets sent to the island. Yes, this may be against the will of some who have it. This is the largest downfall. On the other hand, everyone on the island would recieve the best medical care and the highest quality of life possible. This would ensure that dieing of AIDS would at least afford the individuals infected with the most comfort available.
In the end, countless lives would be saved. A virus would be eliminated. This is a humane possibility. But would it be justifiable?

So now you're saying "Let's murder the people with AIDS"? My my, you are
full
of contradictions! How you can claim this is humane is... amazing.

HIV kills those who are too stupid to use a condom. Its one of those few times I say "Maybe God exists, and he wants to punish dumbasses", though I doubt that hypothesis when I take into account many innocent people were killed by HIV infected blood transfusions.

What? I just said isolate and treat as good as possible. A tropical 5 star island to live out thier days will full health care, and lobster dinners.
@Kath... The WHO would have to do many rounds of testing on the entire population of earth. Probably for 10 years or so.

And they will die without the hope that their lives will end at a ripe age of 85.
That
is
inhumane.

Uhm.... what? I don't think you took the time to read my post. I was saying to try to give them as long and full of lives as possible. Stastically, thier lives would probably be longer, due to the top notch care recieved.
I don't think you read what I posted. I'm not saying to kill people at all.

You'd still run into a small fraction who will fall through the cracks, there's really no way around it. Without the fear of A.I.D.S., people would be less inclined to use protection, and it would creep back. I mean, we haven't even stamped out Polio which we've had
vaccinations
for for how long?
I disagree. The WHO did a pretty good job against smallpox. They got to everyone on the planet... at least a good portion of them. If there were 2 redundant tests a year for 10 years on everyone on the planet, then that means a person would have to pass 20 HIV tests. It wouldn't be impossible to fall through the cracks... but very unlikely. Just like it isn't impossible for Obama to crash through my wall tonite and yell "OH YEAH!". Or maybe James Earl Jones might drop by and offer me a backrub.... Not impossible...

Then you misunderstand me.
By removing the research aspect, you
guarantee
them their deaths by the time they have had the disease for 10 years. Or 15. Or however long it takes.
There is hope that AIDS will have a cure. You would remove that hope? That is as good as killing them, both spiritually as well as physically.

Ignorance and bigotry ITP.
You do realize that most of the world isn't like the U.S.? Quite a low of people are infected at birth world wide.
If you're talking about Africa... HIV is one of the few things preventing them from overpopulating the planet. As for the whole infected at birth thing, sucks for the baby, but the mother/father shouldn't have gotten HIV.

Ah.... I see. AIDS research could be possibly easier done on the island than it is done right now. A lot of the research is being done on how to
prevent its spread
. More could then be focused on how to
cure it
. Either way, the disease would be isolated, and absolutely prevent its spread to other people who hope to live to 85.
