Blizzards problem. They sent it in the mail. To that guys specific char.
In real life if something in the mail comes to me, to my address, with MY NAME on it and I don't know why I got it - if its something useful, why would I care?
Companies mess up all the time and send out coupons and whatnot that are incorrect, and if they don't correct it themselves, their loss!
What blizzard did here is basically like a company sending out a flyer with a coupon, people use the coupon before the company announces that it was erroneous and then the company bans all those people from its stores. LOL? I would never touch wow again if that happened to me. What a joke.

@ Zoneseek, the problem here though is that the coupon company owns your house, your furniture, your clothes, everything. And you signed to let them own it. They can do whatever they want. They demand a bit of integrity with their consumers, though, so that everyone has the same field of play.

I disagree. All they can do really is ban you from their virtual world. It would be like renting a house, and you get evicted. Oh no, there isn't hundreds of other houses in the area you can rent anyway...
I'm just saying, blizz screws up (obviously, that player didn't send himself a gm weapon) and takes it out on a player because said player uses an item that was mailed to him.
Pretty crap move, in my opinion. I realize that they can do whatever they want, but that doesn't make them always right.

An update to the issue can be found on WoWinsider, where
Karate Chop is interviewed
.
It states a guildie received it in the mail, and gave it to Karatechop (as its not soulbound). He then says he used it for fun, not intending to do worlds first achievements or get phat loot. the item has 100 charges, suggesting to Karatechop it was a temporary "gift" from the GMs. All guildies that were online at the time of the incidents, are suspended, and Karatechop is permabanned.
Does this change anything? and do you take his word for it?

Also, the item was recently removed from the code. You can test this by trying to link it in game. Since it is no longer in the code, Karatechop's client progrom would have not recognized the item and it would have been lootable from the mail. Either he, or another user on that computer, reloaded the code from a previous patch loader (found in the WoW folder) and instructed the server to send the client development tools. It is not Blizzard's fault because under normal circumstances, it is impossible to loot much less be mailed a developer item.
The reason your client can't link it is because it hasn't been seen by a player on your sever since the last server restart. All loot works this way.
The reason it hasn't been seen? It's a GM item.

OMG I wouldn't report a glitch that was beneficial to me. How many times do we suffer from glitches, like the way instances have been acting up lately. If Blizzard would keep its crap straight, there wouldn't be any harm or any foul to be discussing.

Of course it is his fault
, he had the tool,
they exploited and abused it
. It doesn't matter how he came across the weapon, whether through a hack or a mistake on a game masters part. Their decision to use it for their own gain could not be any ones blame other than their own.
Rot in limbo, Karatechop, you and your pathetic guild.
And to all the shameful people saying he shouldn't be banned because he didn't break any rules,
read the policy
.
If a player is found to have abused/distributed an exploit, he/she may:
* Be given a verbal warning if exploitation is unintentional and no attempt has been made to hide its occurrence
* Be temporarily suspended from the game
*
In extreme cases the account will be closed outright
Used an exploit. This is the main thing here. If he receved the item in the mail from a GM, be it mistake or not, its not an exploit. If he hacked etc then yea. An item is not an exploit. I have to admit, i dunno what i would have done, but using a bonifide item IS NOT an exploit.
and LOL at people comparing it to morality and bank accounts/money. This is a game. He probably removed any sense of acheivement from Uld, but hats all.
He used an item that normal players were not meant to obtain. How he got it does not matter, his using it was an exploit.
