Should people be able to vote away civil rights for minorities?

Laihendi, you claim that being gay is uncontrollable by you and it is all determined by chemicals in your brain. This would suggest that physically, people are supposed to be gay. If this is true, then why aren't human beings designed to mate male with male or female with female? Perhaps being gay is not determined by what you think it is. I realize this isn't exactly what this topic was determined for, but it seems like it might fit into the discussion.
If the body determines whether they is gay or not, shouldn't the body also being able to follow out that decision? Unless of course the body
doesn't
determine whether a person is gay or not. You always say,
"Why would I choose to be gay? Why would I want to be mocked and ridiculed?"
Well, I've frequently heard you complain at how stupid your grandparents (and possibly parents? I can't be sure on this one . . .) are stupid. And I know that you used to be Christian, so you know that being gay is against those religious morals. So perhaps you made an unconscious decision to be gay, because that would be the perfect way to rebel at what you saw as stupidity incarnate . Perhaps it wasn't determined by uncontrollable chemicals in the brain?
Maybe, instead of catering to the wishes of some people, they should learn to suck it up and stop trying to become a martyr figure or a rebel. Maybe they should try to stop getting attention and actually do something else.
Now that that has been said, I realize that this post will generate a lot of flames (especially from Laihendi) but that is my view. So,
"Flame on!"
Queggy, I just lost 78.3% of any respect/liking I've ever had for you.
Shtols, may you watch over this poor, broken spirit, and guide him back to the path of truth.

Earlier when someone said it is wrong to raise children in religeon for reasons of "brainwashing", the children don't have to accept what their parents have set up for them, they have the choice to rebel and reject it just as much as they have the right to accept it. You are not born gay, you choose to be gay. For a time I had my own doubts about being straight, I gave honest thought to being gay. But I chose not to. I wavered for a while, a testiment that nothing is set in stone, and then I whole heartedly made the choice to be heterosexual for the rest of my earthly time.
No.

Uglybunny, there's a difference between choosing to live a heterosexual lifestyle despite being attracted to someone of the same gender, and choosing who you are attracted to. Ask anyone who's been in love... you don't choose who to fall in love with, it just happens.
Similarly, no one chooses who they are physically attracted to. When you go to school, do you think "ooh I think I'm going to decide that that girl is attractive!"? Likely not, you probably see someone that's pretty, and think "wow, she's really pretty".
You don't choose who you're attracted to, regardless of gender.

The flame detectors are watching this thread.
Queggy has expressed a very unpopular opinion--particularly unpopular among the misfits that typically make up the Internet--but that's no reason to lose respect for him. I disagree with him (intensely), but I don't see this as any reason to treat him poorly, any more than being gay is an excuse to treat Laihendi poorly.
Let's see some genuine debate on the topic--or perhaps even start another thread. But I caution you to avoid therealm of the personal wherever possible--you too, Queggy. :)
A friend of mine (
Nabterayl
) actually posted a very interesting blog about this on his personal site. I'll link it assuming I can get permission from him.

Hitler wasn't fated to kill millions. But he was fated to be, for instance, male.
I can control the fact that I'm lazy. I can't control the fact that I have freckles. Some traits are different than others.

Yep.
There are studies that say that genetics do influence sexual preferences, and then there's the studies that say that it's psychological.
The popular belief is that it's a mix of these things, but there's no direct proof or anything. Feel free to believe whatever you think causes homosexuality, just don't bash each other. That one's at you Queggy.

I guess some people might be suprised how much power a decision can have. Laihendi, I had what your explaining for a while. Suddenly guys started looking really attractive, thats why I started having doubts about being straight. Then I conciously made a decision to be straight, since then I havn't been attracted to men.
Seriously, you can decide your own fate. Saying something is set in stone from your birth is really depressing. It's saying that fate controls me, I don't control fate. I have to be what fate wants me to be. Saying that is like saying Hitler had to grow up to be one of the most infamous dicators of all time, he had to kill millions, he was born that way.
So you choose who you're attracted to?

So you choose who you're attracted to?
Generally speaking. When I firmly decided on a gender I liked that gender, and no not an exact person.
I know where your arguement is heading in saying that you can't choose to like a certain person and then suddenly like them, but in terms of just gender I think it can be done, argueably.
How is choosing the person different from choosing the gender? Isn't it the same concept?
