For me, personally, the argument of "I'd rather be staring at a female characters ass for 90 levels" is invalid. When I play, I rarely even look at my character, as I'm focusing more on the target, the health bars, and the cool downs. Even when I'm just running, I'm looking ahead of my character and not at it.
And that's great
for you
.
I play with my camera zoomed out to roughly 3rd person view, and I was
thrilled
when they introduced the barbershop because I had gotten sick of my nelf's ponytail. Even when it's not the center of your attention, the appearance of the character can impinge on the player's awareness. I imagine it's even more pronounced for people, like my husband, who keep their camera at a 2nd person zoom level. Which would help explain why he has all female toons. For him, the "I'd rather stare at a female bum" explanation is completely valid.

To me aesthetics haven't really played a part, I have a mix of both sexes and every race.
I can understand why someone would find the female models more pleasing, but the way i play the game I'm with Gornith, I am more focused on where I'm going, what I'm doing next etc to pay any mind to how my virtual booty looks.
every time i hear i don't want to stare at a doods ass the first thing that comes in my mind are closet gays.......
Wouldn't a closet gay roll a male character and just keep quiet having the best of both worlds? I think you've misunderstood the priorities of someone who wishes to keep their sexuality under wraps.
As an extension to your outrageous line of thinking, does this make anyone with a male character obviously gay?
I wonder what your theory says about people who look at a male Tauren ass all day long.
If that is the first thing that comes to your mind I'd suggest it isn't really being used that frequently, maybe you should educate yourself and cram a little more knowledge into there.

I'm a female playing a male character. This is because:
1. The female characters in the game are all "hot and sexy," where even the female equivalents of dwarves, tauren, and orcs are far more "pretty" compared with the male counterparts. I don't *want* to play as a sex object/seductress/eye candy for men, and I don't want armor I wear to look like skimpy lingerie by default (which is unfair in the first place since you don't even have a choice to make it look like it isn't skimpy lingerie. Granted, with transmog (which only came in recent years) you can make it look like something else altogether, but there's no way to make that piece of armor look normal).
2. The game isn't exactly friendly toward female players in terms of fan service, which might not bother me so much if they weren't so blatantly and obviously friendly toward male players in terms of fan service. They threw us a bone in TBC with male blood elves, which are sort of vaguely handsome, or at least not as hideously ugly as some of the other male characters. (Consider, for example, the fact that almost all male models of any race have wrinkles, grimaces, skin imperfections, grotesque noses, etc... while the female equivalents very seldom do. In real life, people of both genders have these features... why can't there be a human model, or a NE or orc model, without huge wrinkles, who is just handsome?) So I play a male BE as my main. But of course with the one race that had a not-completely-hideous male character, Bliz had to make them act very flamboyant and ridiculously fruity, which resulted in players egging on the association that being handsome is being 'fruity,' and that only female models should be attractive. I'm sure this is awesome for male players, but for me it ranges from feeling like I'm not welcome in the game as a female, to feeling like Bliz doesn't really care about what I as a player would like to look at.
I think part of the reason there aren't as many female players playing male characters is
because
almost all male models are ugly. I know from my own female friends who play that they would really have liked to see more attractive male models in the game, this is part of the reason Final Fantasy is popular among female players.
Every now and again when players find out I'm female they would ask me why I play a male character, like they can't get around that it's based in the same reasons a lot of guys play female characters: I like guys, it's as simple as that.

The Blood Elves are the only Horde race with attractive female models (there's ONE Forsaken female face that isn't hideous, but good luck finding decent hair and skin to go with it). Female dwarves are about as hideous as the male humans, and gnomes removed. Female Draenei, Worgen, and pandas are cute, but not in an "I want to tap that" kind of way. Well,
maybe
the Draenei, if I've been celebrating Brewfest a bit too hard.
So... what game are YOU playing? It's clearly not WoW.
and I don't want armor I wear to look like skimpy lingerie by default (which is unfair in the first place since you don't even have a choice to make it look like it isn't skimpy lingerie. Granted, with transmog (which only came in recent years) you can make it look like something else altogether, but there's no way to make that piece of armor look normal).
My highest-level female toon is 85 and she has yet to encounter even a single piece of armor that could be described in such a way, except for that invisible leather chest piece from Arathi or whatever, which is invisible on both male and female toons. By the way, have you ever seen a Forsaken female running around near-naked? It's NOT a turn-on.

You do realize that you can create male toons without those features, right? And they don't have to be Blood Elves, right?
Examples:
Forsaken male face #2, features set to #1
Night Elf male face #9
Draenei male faces all look as good as can be expected for a race with Klingon foreheads and tentacles growing out of their chins, with #5 and #8 standing out for me.
EVERY male gnome face except for #3
Dwarf faces don't matter because you can't see them under all that facial hair
Worgen/Tauren/Pandas... if you're into that sort of thing, I have no advice for you.(##RESPBREAK##)2060##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##That line just wasn't appropriate for Wowhead.

Why's it matter?
I think if you're choosing characters soley based off appearance, you're playing the wrong game.

Appearance is the only difference between male and female characters in WoW...

I roll for casting animation and what I find aesthetically pleasing. And, I confess, my first female toon was rolled for borderline sexist reasons. I rolled an UD male mage back in '06, the shortly thereafter, I rolled an alt priest to heal. I, at the time, thought healing was a more feminine role, so I made an UD female priest.
Now, I just roll w/e the hell I feel like and what looks good. Currently thats female trolls because, yeah, female trolls. Hawt stuff standing around org in xmogged gear. Less common and definitely more noticeable then the 700 million female blood elves you see everywhere.
Most of my alliance toons are humans for the racial.
But lately, Ive been playing any race/gender/class combo I feel like. As for how, I'm not sure its allowed to be discussed.

... so very many males opt to play female characters. Why do you think this is? I'd like to figure out exactly what makes the ratio so skewed.
I play a male dwarf DK from time to time. .
But maybe, because the female characters look more appealing? :P

I like to roll female toons because I like they way they look, but there's more to it than that.
I also feel the 'males protect females' dynamic comes into play as well, but it may go deeper. I feel like I'm taking care of this female toon by playing it, leveling it and gearing it. The closest form of guardianship is possession. Maybe I want to empathize with a female and this may serve as a means to do so. I don't know. I'm not a therapist.
You must feel pretty horrible when you get her killed...

I have a level 90 male troll druid. I've had a female troll before and do not care for them. Besides, my male troll in his mogs is really hot. :P
Also, I have a male belf fetish, and have made a male belf dk because they starter gear looks so damn sexy on him.

Diversity and casting animation. I have character for each class, 11, and they're all male except 1.

I absolutely love male undead animations, I love male orc melee gear, and I love male Pandaren with end game gear, but I just can't bring myself to make a male character. So I just stick with Blood Elf..
I can't bring myself to play a character I dont like the look, like female pandaren, female undead, female tauren voice (ugh) etc..
