You guys are all worried about kids getting into groups and being sworn at and the like, but I think that letting kids below a certain age is a bad idea because of how addictive it can be. In fact, my cousin was given a gameboy when he was 5 or 6 years old and even by now, 5 years later, he has put on significant weight and doesn't want to do anything but play video games, and is living a fairly unhealthy lifestyle.
I'm of the belief that kids should not be allowed to play video games until a certain age or maturity. If parents are going to push kids into doing something, introduce them to sports, then give them the option of video games later on. Not only will they be keeping active, but they will have more self control. I know people who resent their parents for giving them a game system too young because they had no self control and ended up becoming obsessed with it and led an extremely sedentary lifestyle as a child, which affected both physical growth and overall health.
TL:DR, Parents shouldn't get their kids to play video games before a certain age.

Last summer I saw an
eleven year old
playing GTA.
I'm starting to think that parents don't pay attention to the ESRB ratings.
Edit for italics fail.

Anyone flat out saying "NO 10/11/12 year olds in WoW" is not taking into account many, many variables in the equation. I have a friend with 3 kids between 11-16. They all (including his wife) have an account. He polices them at all times when they're online, and he will lay the hammer of law down should they ever try to play when he's not.
Don't just assume that parents are using the computer as a babysitter replacement... Don't make a blanket statement in this type of scenario... as it will never hold true for the whole, and usually won't even hold for the majority.
Hell, some of the best tanks I've rolled with were people who sounded like Mickey Mouse.
That being said, most morons I've run across who've tried to play the age card are anywhere between 15-25... that is a pointless fact that I've been holding onto.
side note: As for the people saying "A girlfriend at 12? Kids these days!": I'm 30. I had aspirations to have a girlfriend at around the same age (though if I recall correctly, I was rejected in the 8th grade... woe is me). I did have my first girlfriend the next year, at 13. So hey, older people were doing the same crap the kids today are doing, only most people have their "we were awesome and did no wrong" glasses on...

im 12 years old and a girl, and i have a lvl 80 shammy on WoW :) ..playing wow already few months, and im okey in it . And im good in english cuz im playing mmorpgs since i was9 years old( cuz of my bro :D ) they really upgrade ur englsih xD .. Also i think they will be awsome with 2 weeks of playing when they learn how to play like i did :) , and get better wich each lvl.. But i think it's not okey thinking other players are bad just cuz they are few years younger.. ( edit: sorry if i wrote some words wrong)
My eyes are bleeding.
you need more wow. your english is still not good enough.
Considering she posted this on 9-19-2009 her English has probably improved. Although her spelling probably hasn't as most people on Wow can't seem to spell. Unless they're not native-English-speakers of course, then they're spelling tends to be quite good.

we wiped when he decided he wanted to go into meele range and "help the glowing man fight the dragon".
Awwww....
Thats just so cute.
More on topic though.
There is nothing wrong with kids playing the game as long as it is under supervision by the parent until the parents feel they are ok to play alone.
There is also the parental control to make sure the kid doesnt sit too much infornt of the game.
I dont have kids myself, but if I did, I wouldnt allow more than anhour or so per day of video games until they were old enough to take their own responsibility over it (and that is a judgement call of the parent of course).
Besides, the maturity thing here, Most of the younger players I've met that are ok are usually low teens or preteens, most of the young asshats are mid-late teens up to mid 20's. That is quite normal though as that is the time they start to revolt against their parents and want to make their own way in the world, and it reflects into the game world aswell. Thats when they stop to take advices as good as before and all that.
Thats my experience anyway.
But as with everything else, there are fo course exceptions, and it shouldnt be taken for granted that they are wads just because of their age.

If a young child wants to play who doesn't really understand the game, then I'd like to know beforehand. Then we can do something where the child's toon isn't needed. There's plenty of stuff that four eighties can solo and where a child can have fun just messing about.

That is cute. But I feel bad for healers. "Do you get to help the glowing man fight the dragon?"
"No. I sit in the back and watch health bars."

I equip shield. (I'm a Death Knight).
secondly, the underlined part I marked sorta confused me
Death Knights cannot equip shields. They tank with either a 2-hander, usually blood-spec, or Dual-Wielding, ususally Frost-Spec.

"i know kids more mature than 30 year olds,"
well, maybe they don't act like blathering idiots, but until a kid gets a job and starts paying bills there is no way in hell they're 100% more mature than an adult. and then you take into account real world experiences other than just working and paying bills: experiencing relationships, sex, clubs, bars, alcohol, drugs etc -- things as an adult i've done more times than i can count, but to a kid are enigmatic. i remember going into my first club at 18 nervous as anything, even though it was 18+(cause i was drinking tho).
so while i realize there are adults that are as ignorant and/or just as stupid as a stereotypical child, the quote i posted above usually gives me no end to the lulz. more mature? pay rent, utilities, cell phone, cable, internet, WoW account, XBL account, buy your consoles, video games, etc and then talk to me about being mature.
mature doesn't just mean "well spoken."
mini-rant over.
and sure, kids 13 and up should play WoW.

=/= means "does not equal"
2+2=4
2+3 =/= 4
"!=" is not equal.
Cheers.

The notation
a ≠ b
means that
a
is
not equal
to
b
, but does not say that one is greater than the other or even that they can be compared in size.
(The forms
!=
,
/=
or
<>
are generally used in programming languages where ease of typing and use of ASCII text is preferred.)
