Just wondering. is there any way for a player to be able to roll on armor types not of his kind?
main reason i ask is that my pally will soon hit 80, he's holy / ret. now, been looking over a lot of the starter gear, and i've noticed that there is a LOT of desirable holy non-plate gear out there. and also, theres a very limited selection of holy plate.
so my question is, when i Queue up for random dungeons, is there any way i'll be able to roll need on leather / mail holy gear that i want? aside from asking the other members to just pass.

Nope. Have to greed, sadly. I wish there was an "offspec" button, or something, while still preventing you from rolling need.

This needs to happen.

What is also stupid is that in the pre-BC dungeons my druid can roll on cloth but from BC onward he cannot. Double standard ftl.

The problem with this is someone could always exploit an offspec button--say a Shaman with enchanting--saving the "offspec" pieces to disenchant/vendor once out of group. However, I do agree there needs to be a change but I'm not sure how.

The looting system isn't perfect, and it'll probably never be perfect, however, even with the current system this could happen, say, with a priest rolling need on all the cloth for disenchanting.
And it would be somewhat noticeable if a user was abusing this function by the other party members, at which point they can report it.
Addressing your concerns, they could change it so that if you roll "offspec" you cannot disenchant or vendor the items, althought that would require a bit of work on Blizzard's part.

Yeah, I got screwed out of a big upgrade for my Paladin one time, because of this stupid system. A
Mail
caster helm dropped, and before I could tell people to pass, they all hit D/E button, so I got screwed out of a 200->232 upgrade. GG Blizz.

What seems to be the standard is that people dont just hit the disenchant button when a cloth/leather/mail drops.
usually they ask "Do you want that cloth wrist, pally?" before pressing anything. If you say "yes", they will pass so you can greed and get it. If (unlikely) someone do press disenchant anyway, the rest of the group all press greed, and trade it to you of they win.
So its no problem really, only a minor setback with a few rare misclicks.

Never happened to me.
Imo, if someone wants gear, they usually look it up and know which boss drops what, and ask beforehand.

Blizzard is fine, they are only doing what they can with the current system. Remember, Need and Greed were implemented long before Dual Spec. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Cataclysm introduces us to "Main Spec", "Off Spec", "Disenchant", and "Greed" rolls.

Blizzard is fine.
Fine, like most things, are relative. They can certainly do better.

Instead of adding other button for "Offspec rolls", "this is BIS for me but lower armor class so i need rolls" etc. the problem can simply be solved by removing one button.
How? Just add the disenchant option to the 1h trade timer on the item...problem solved.
Now everyone can ask the need or greed winner to trade and you still have the disenchant option (rightclick on the item...maybe with confirmation box) if enchanters are present in the run.

Dealing with rules is hard.

While this is true, he stil has the right to question the current method wich let's admit, plain sucks.
Glad we can at least stil use other ways in raids, I can't imagine a lot of classes being happy not being able to roll on their BiS piece.

If you are after a specific piece of loot then LFD will not be your friend. You would be better off getting your own server groups.
SO TRUE
yea like last night a dk rolls need on Orca-Hunter's Harpoon.
Of course the a hole has one of the icc10 2 hand swords.
OH I LIKE TO ROLL..hahahahaha
The hunter already had it and I was looking for an upgrade on my bear.
===BLIZ RANT====
BUT thanks to bliz there are NO bear weapons in ICC and their blue response said they
can not be expected to cover every class.
