Good day fellow evildoers. I've been thinking about this pretty glowing orange hand on my action bar every day and wonder why the hell it's there. Does anyone even use this? It's definitely not practical for PvE since the threat it generates is a deathwish.
Is it decent for PvP at all? Perhaps squeeze it in when you can't fit in an incinerate? But even then the damage would seem subpar compared to immo...
The only reason I would ever use this spell is maybe if the tank died and I needed to hold aggro as a metamorphed lock for the last 30 seconds of a boss fight (and even
that
is reaching...)

hmm, actually the reason warlocks have a high threat ability is because they're a pet class. hunters have distracting shot for the same reason. the idea is that a pet class may need to manage threat between their pet and themselves so they needed the ability to take threat should the need arise.
it never really worked out like that and i don't think i've ever heard of anyone using it for this reason.
pets tanking is an aberration so don't worry about that. it was the result of the ability 'avoidance' and overly enthusiastic pet scaling in the early part of wrath. it wasn't ever considered an actual exploit but it was using game mechanics to trivialize the hardest encounter in the game.
i think twin emps was just a gimmick like any other you see in raids but it made locks feel warm, fuzzy and special.

i actually didn't think i'd find a source for it. it's the kind of thing that was just common knowledge at launch, like maybe it was in the original printed manual or something ^^
anyway:
There is nothing to warlock spells that make them cause more threat than a similar spell by say a mage. The exception are spells like Searing Pain that specifically state that they generate increased threat. That issue is from a (possibly antiquated) design where the lock might need to pull off of their pet to save its life while soloing.

That's weird...I would much sooner health funnel than searing pain something...

as i said that was the intention and that was why those abilities were given to pet classes. i've never used them that way and i don't know anyone else who has.

For PvP it can be great. Add talents into improved and its almost certain to get a 4-7kcrit, plus a very short cast time. If you have the haste and SP to back it up, its allows for quick bursts and mobility. Purely a destro thing though.
