I hope this is the right forum, if not let me know please where I should post this.
After three years of using my up/down/side arrow keys to move, (and left hand to cast) I decided to get with it and start mouse turning instead of the famous back paddling. I just started today and let me tell you, I feel like a NOOB! Insane, no control,...yet.
I need help with a couple of key binds please. Im a Hunter btw.
One key bind I need help is where and how to select targets. As of now, I use the tab key which for some reason is very hard to get to for me. It's a lot easier in PvE where I have plenty of time but I like to do Bg's where it takes me way too long. I used to use the space bar which was easy to hit, did not have to look down. With the tab I have to look and see where it is.
Any suggestions on what else I can use? Or is there a way of a mouse over target selection? Would that work better?
So far, I hate this new way but it's probably because I have only done it for the past couple of hours.
Another thing thats hard to get used to is the strafe keys which I have at A and D. If I strafe to the right (D, using index finger), I can still hit all the number keys with my fingers (have spells on 1-4) but If I have to strafe to the left (A) it becomes awkward.
I also feel like I still need a key to move back in some situations, so I assigned that to X. Not sure if thats good or not. Originally I liked that I was able to back up a bit while I selected my target. Now I just stand there still fishing for the tab key.
Any suggestions on how to improve this would be appreciated. I'm open to other suggestions as well.
Btw, I also only have a simple mouse with right click, left click and a wheel.
Thanks.

Have you considered using both the keyboard and mouse to control your movements?
For example, I use ESDF as movement keys (with S and F as strafe and W and R as turn keys like the arrow keys), with my quick reaction/frequent use abilities on the keys around ESDF and on the 1-7 number keys. I have V set to target nearest enemy, B bound in Ventrilo for push to talk, PvP trinket on Z, Will of the Forsaken on Q, etc. etc. etc. You get the idea.
It takes some serious getting used to, but eventually you learn how to combine the mouse movement (holding left+right mouse button and steering) along with the ESDF (or WASD if that's your thing) in such a way that you'll
never
not have control of your characters movements. You can combine keyboard shortcuts and mouse clicks to cast, and the keyboard movement and mouse steering to control your character.
The redundancy allows you to always have one method of control/casting available to you at all times. It also allows you to use both methods of steering or spellcasting at once. Want to circle-turn while moving forward and in the opposite direction of the circle? This is
only
doable by using both mouse and keyboard input (ie. forward+left on keyboard w/ mouse1+mouse2 while moving mouse to the right). Want to be able to throw two abilities back to back with as little delay between the two as possible? keyboard shortcut one, and mouse click the other (I use this to vanish+sap in pvp by mouse clicking vanish and hitting my sap keyboard shortcut).
Honestly, it really comes down to your personal preference. What I described above is how
I
play, and may just not work for you, but I hope you at least get some ideas out of it. One thing that will likely help you out greatly if you find yourself running out of keyboard shortcuts is to move your hand one row to the right (ie. WASD -> ESDF). That single change puts something like 11 more keys within easy reach of your left hand.
edit:
Forgot to address the strafing left + hitting a left side keybind... Move your abilities so that you don't have anything super critical on the first few number keys. For example, my setup has my three most used abilities on 3, 4, and 5. With them that far to the right, I can still hit S with my ring finger and hit all three of them. If I need to hit 2 while strafing to the left, I rotate my hand and hit the number keys with my middle finger (still using my ring finger to strafe). I rarely ever have to hit 1 in a time sensitive situation as I have it set to auto-attack (mainly as confirmation that I'm still attacking as it can be hard to tell sometimes in raids). If for some reason I need to hit it while strafing left, I just right click my target instead.
Hope that helps XD

So you are saying you have ESDF for moving as well? Like, E = forward, S and F = strafe and the D to move back?

Correct, or at least that's what I use. If you have to hit a keybind with your left hand, you switch to the mouse for movement till your done. For example, if I'm moving in a straight line forward (ie. holding E) and I want to hit my ability on 4. I'll click and hold left and right mouse buttons while I hit 4 then go back to holding E again. If I wanted to use an ability that's not in the immediate area of my left hand, I'd continue holding E and click the ability with the mouse.

I hope you realize that most people who "mouse turn" are simply just holding down the Button2 mouse button (typically referred to as the right-button, though some people are lefties!) and dragging their mouse whichever direction they want to look to turn. I too have shifted my movement buttons to ESDF to open up QAZ for additional keybinds, but I still use my Button4 on my mouse to "Autorun" forward in most fights. Strafing is done by pushing the left-right turn while at the same time holding down the Button2 mouse button to look the opposite direction.
To select your targets, the fastest way is to keep up the plates (use an addon like TidyPlates if you don't like the default) and click on the plate itself to target the person you want to burn down. Alt+Tabbing will always be slower than just clicking on the person, and all you have to do is let go of the right-button for a split-second to do so.
If that still feels uncomfortable, you can always unkeybind S & F and rebind those to "Strafe Left" and "Strafe Right" instead of "Turn Left" and "Turn Right" and give that a shot as well.
If there is one thing I can recommend AGAINST doing is the Button1 & Button2 autorun that you seem to be doing. Keep your Autorun on a single button (Button4) to keep moving, click it once and fire off the spell/ability if it isn't an instant, and then hit it again to keep moving. If you need to "Back Up," turn yourself around and sprint, then turn back. It's faster and safer to do that than backing up 90% of the time.
Last thing: all this was under the assumption to at least have a 5-button mouse, so if you don't have that...do yourself a favor and go pick up a cheap $20 one.

Clarification to my setup: I use mouse4 to auto-run. The advantage of mouse1+mouse2 to move forward is seen in the fact that it stops if you let go, so for short periods of time it's actually faster to m1+m2 than move my thumb up to m4 or hit T on my keyboard :P

Meh, I've just learned to double-click Button4 quickly instead of tripping over the Mouse1+Mouse2 setup when trying to target someone. I tried the Mouse1+Mouse2 setup and all it did was throw off mah groove.

To each his own :P keybindings and playstyle are really an individual thing anyway. You need to work out what's best for yourself and go with that. The best anyone else can do is offer other things to try XD

It's just the binding for "toggle auto-run" I think it defaults to r or something like that, but myself (and tenshigure) have it bound to mouse4.

I bind that to my thumb button. I don't strafe; I move around solely by toggling run on and off and mouse turning.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I have to admit, this is the worst I have ever played. With my old play style, I did really well except the annoying back pedaling when I was up against a melee.
Even then, I sometimes managed to just turn around (keyboard style) and try to run off. I hope this is just something I need to get used to. I played the old style pretty much since WoW came out. But I started to realize how much more limited I am with it so I wanted to change.
I do only have a 2 button mouse which I start to realize does obsoletely not work well. I am not comfortable with the mouse turn yet. I actually overturn a lot of times, kind of funny. Yesterday, I tried to get distance from a Rogue, turned, ran off, then I tried to turn back to get a concussive shot on him, still worked, but, then I tried to turn back the other way to run. Well, I OVER turned, did pretty much a 360, and ran right into his knifes, lol.
Anyway, I set up my mouse wheel click to back off which I like but, yes, I do have to hold both mouse buttons to run which I hate right now.I also have problems with strafing AND using key buttons 1-4 at the same time (I use A and D for the strafe). Like I said before, I sure hope this is something I just need to get used to. Of course I still push the old buttons to get a shot off which are not bound to anything anymore which is nice (NOT) if you are right in the middle of a fight. Anyway, I'll keep practicing. Thanks guys for the help. If you think you got more pointers for me, please let me know. I can use all the help I can get.

Is there something I need to adjust on the camera view in order to actually run sideways and shoot? In order for me to see my target behind me, I have to strafe (going around in a circle) then jump and mouse turn a bit to get the target in view.
There is a video on YouTube where a Hunter talks about kiting. He runs toward the camera sideways, looking back to his target) unless he did something to the video which I doubt.
I appreciate the suggestion from everybody, I'm still a noob but I am slowly getting used to it (still get my butt kicked). Of course on top of trying this new style, I am completely under geared, lol.

Again, holding your right-mouse button in while strafing the opposite direction of where you are going will allow you to effectively "look behind you". Keep in mind that save for special abilities you are unable to shoot and run at the same time, however. The further you pull back, the further you can look backwards (sometimes to the point that when I'm stunned in ToC for example I'll actually be running towards the camera when I take control again).

Go into your settings and alter the 'smart camera' options. By default it will automatically return your camera to a position behind your avatar when you let go of the buttons.
