Part 2
________
I didn’t stop, just kept going, and I rode, to find the knights sent some days ago.
Finally I found some scouts they had put in the area and I knew one of the men,
“Charlie, what are the news from the frontlines?” I yelled to him.
He slowly came closer to me, “Sorry Rales, I couldn’t tell you really, been scouting here the whole time… you should go talk to-“
“Yeah, I’ll go talk to to Ol’ Sully”
Ol’ Sully aka Sullivan Syne was a high ranked knight, the person in charge of the whole mission, besides that he was in his mid forties and fighting without showing any signs of old age.
He was the best tactician I knew and a damn good friend of mine.
I entered their camp and went straight to his tent, he looked at me and before I could say anything, he interrupted me and whispered, “I’m sorry…”
I knew what that meant, but I didn’t want to believe it, I wanted one of us to be wrong…
Again, before I could say anything he interrupted me and said, “The scourge attacked us, he was taken…”
This was too much for me, I took a seat and just tried to hold my emotions in me.
“What will I do now?” I asked him quietly.
“Gerard… the way I see it, you have 3 options…
A, you’re still young, leave this place, find peace, live your life…
B, Go look for your brother, he might be alive…
or, C, stay with us and fight for glory and honor. “
“Well… I’m a deserter now and I’m bound with these lands, that leaves B and C… how many men do you have?”
“After the attack, 81 are too wounded to fight, taken by the Scourge, sent back or killed so… 419… would be a nice number with you and your mighty blade…”
“Well... give me a moment will ye?”
“You got plenty of time…” he said and I walked out.
I ran, didn’t have a direction, just to get some time to myself, and at one point I fell to my knees, I cryed and prayed, everyone knew that hope had left these lands, but I still prayed.
Then I heard a voice, didn’t recognize it and I didn’t turn around.
“They say you speak of dying in battle as if it was ever lasting glory.”
“Sounds like something I'd say…” I whispered to him,
“See I always thought that there would come a time when chaos left this world in ruins and the days of the old would be forgotten…”
I rose, wiped my tears, looked him in the eye and whispered, “Then fight to delay the coming of those times!”
He grinned, “My name is Barry, Barry McFane, I guess I’ll see you around?”
I looked at him, he was young, much too young to be dying here, I didn’t reply, just walked back to the camp and got ready for the next day, it was going to be one hell of a battle.
