Why do people still PvE?

PvP seems more forgiving. One always can always claim to be at the wrong side of a rock scissors paper situation.
In PvE it's different. P defeats E and not the other way around.

to me PvE vs PvP is like choosing to do campaign or multiplayer. Or like fighting a scripted boss vs fighting someone who can be good or bad, and doesn't depend on patches for a nerf or buff (normally)

Hey, I see where you're coming from. I love PvP. It's pretty much all I do. I only saw the reason to do PvE was to get gear so I can trash more kids in PvP. But I now see the appeal of PvE. The lore, the big-ass boss, beating that big-ass boss with friends at your side, getting the epic loots to show off your e-peen and 'dragon killing' skills and whatnot. Not to sound like a PvP jerk to anyone, but I definitely see the appeal to it. I personally love the Ulduar raid. I want to see more like it. It's long, epic, visually appealing, and intuitive.
I am a PvP guy though, just that I'm not amazing at it, but it's what I do. WoW is an open-ended game for people on different ends of the spectrum. Casuals who RP and do world events and read up on lore. People who do a mix of everything. People who PvE all of the time, and people that PvP all of the time. There's an appeal somewhere for somebody.

EDIT: I will say this though, PvP takes a lot more skill/knowledge then PvE, IMO (I do both btw, no bias)
No. I run into so many idiots, unless you are talking about high end arena teams, I can faceroll almost anyone in absolutely no Resil gear.
Anyways, I like PvE because of
A. The epic lore.
B. I don't have to worry about idiots saying "we lose" and "we suck" at the beginning of a game.
C. PvE is more forgiving imo. In PvP if you do bad once I always seem to be raged on.
D. The fights are just more fun in PvE. In PvP it's just run around and spam attacks/cleane/heal (paladin). For PvE I can get into a cool fight like DB Saurfang or the Gunship Battle.

In hardcore PvE, there's 25 people to screw it up. scripted mobs do not commit mistakes. 25 humans, well...
In hardcore PvP, there's the same chance for human mistake for both teams, ignoring the fact that one combo is probably better than the other one.

Why do people play Half-Life 2 and Episode 1+2 instead of Half-Life 2 Deathmatch?
Because of the gameplay and immersion.

Because PvP sucks and I suck at PvP.
Did you ever think that maybe pvp sucks for you because you suck at pvp?
...?
On topic: I still PvE because I enjoy working with other people against an AI... Much like Paladingod, I just find it a lot more satisfying killing the computer with friends than killing another player.
To me, PvP seems really scrappy in most MMOs, whereby people just jump around and whomever stays behind the other for the longest tends to win.
Another reason, for me, would be that new content, at least whilst the game is 'supported', so to speak, gets released semi-regularly.
