Hey, Ive had my mage at 80 for 5 days now and have been gearing him up. It seems though as I get better and better gear, my dps isnt improving. Ive been stuck between 2.2-2.6k dps on every random I do. its been that low for days now and have gotten my sp up a 1'000 since I dinged. I know that I have plenty on hit rating and my haste needs to be better .Im nowhere close to being done with gearing up. I have read all the stickies and am doing the ab + mb rotation and stil not doing better dps. Just wondering if someone could help me out? Also im on a strict budget from getting my 450 engineering on another toon so, my gems and chants cant improve til I get more gold.

If you're looking at total average DPS, it's going to be pretty low. DPS on trash mobs is pointless. Compare your boss fight DPS to everybody else's, that's where Arcane Mages shine. (Note: Once you do this and see you have like 5k DPS as opposed to everybody elses 2k or so, don't be a $%^&*! about it :P)
This is my character:

Granted, I logged off in PvP gear/spec, but my GS is roughly 2200-2500 and I'm pulling an average of 3.5k across the entire instance, but like 5.5k-6k on bosses.

You need to pick up TTW for sure. Like Goyoma says, the overall dps doesn't matter much, you're really there to worry about burning down the bosses most of the time.

Sometimes I wonder why my DPS is so high in heroics. I've literally had fights where I was doing over 6k on the boss, 2nd place was doing 4k, and everyone else was hanging at 2k or below (with the tank doing 1.7k). It's not like I'm all that awesomely geared...how the hell was the tank keeping aggro with that kind of disparity?

If the fight takes <30s, which is most heroic bosses, your dps will be huge! This obviously doesn't count for trash which dies in <5s. Those cooldowns that last 20s we have mean a lot more when the fight is only 20s long. In raids with bosses like Patchwerk you'll see your dps really average out. That's the problem with trying to compare your dps with people over a forum, unless you have the same target for the same time, it really doesn't mean much. A sub 2500 gs will not average 5-6k dps on Patchwerk or a target dummy for 4mins. Maybe 5k if raid buffed.

I did a TOC25 last night on my mage. I was top 5 DPS for boss fights according to my Recount, and top 10 for damage dealt. My Overall also fell within Top 10. Not bad considering that I have almost no raid gear.

I agree. Bosses in heroics die quickly enough where I can blow my cd's and just AB spam most of the time until it's dead. If for any reason it doesn't die by the time I'm low on mana, I Mana Gem and start ABx4 + MBarr until it's dead.
Another little trick to bump you up just a tad more is to not blow your cd's until you have a 4 stack of AB. I wait until my stack is at four, than I blow Icy Veins, Talisman of Resurgence, and Arcane power all at the same time. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to increase DPS as opposed to using the first 6 seconds of my CD's building up the stacks.

It's rhetoric, I know, but: 40% Arcane threat reduction.

Usually when I dps during long encounters I usually use a arcane barrage after the 4th stack of arcane blasts if missile barrage haven't proqed.
This only counts if I have below 50% mana and I know I will go oom before the boss dies, Else I just keep on spamming Arcane blast, if I go oom i'll just use my belf racial, mana gem and I can hold up for another 30sec -> 1 min, I usually mix that with my evocation right afterwards.
My gear is way over the posters gear but shouldnt really be a problem especially not in heroics and 10man raids.

Thanks dude, this really helps a ton. I just wanted to think you guys once more for the help. I switched my recount to current fights to get better reads off the boss fights and ill be blowing a cool 5-6k dps. All the mob trash that gets added into my overall doesnt matter since i dont have time to do huge casts on all them.
P.S. thanks for putting the "Torment the weak" talent into perspective for me. I thought it was only for my slows and snares which I dont often cast
