That's the thing about opinions...everyone's got one :p
Just stick to your guns, tell him your enjoy what you do but you will still do arena as and when you can.
...or roll a horde and level in peace!

It's your game time, do what you feel like doing. Collecting nerdpoints (achievements), fishing, collecting mounts/pets, making gold, collecting obscure items...all are part of the game just as much as arena, world pvp, or raiding/pve.
Do what you like, go with what you like. Same as your race/faction choice...if you wished you nelf was an orc the whole time you played it, then that's just not very fun now is it?

There's nothing wrong with having alts. I love leveling, unlike many people out there. If you truly take the time to appreciate the zone for their design and beauty, leveling can be quite fun. There's also (usually) an interesting bit of background or story behind every quest, which is something that most people overlook, instead choosing to see it as "go kill X of this, gather Y of that". This is why people find leveling a bore; nobody has the patience to actually read through the quest text to find out what's going on anymore. For people like me, however, there's a special kind of joy that can be found in between the lines of the quest text.
Your friend believes that it's asinine to chose a race based on its looks. On the contrary, I believe that's
exactly
what you should do. Think of it this way: You're going to be looking at this character each and every time you play it from now until the day comes that you finally quit the game. Why not choose something that is visually appealing to you? More importantly, why
wouldn't
you do that? Now, racial abilities can be a large factor in deciding which race to choose, and some racials will be more beneficial than others for a certain race or profession, which may cause you to lean more towards a particular race, but in the end, it's only half of the equation. Nobody is going to buy a fast car if it looks absolutely terrible, and nobody is going to buy a beautiful car if it can only go 60mph.
As far as whether it's better to play Horde or Alliance, again, it's really a matter of your own personal preference. I personally love the Horde, everything from the races to the atmosphere and ambiance of the towns and cities. PvP dominance shouldn't be a key factor in most cases unless one faction completely
destroys
the other faction, which is very rare to see. Most battlegroups are fairly balanced in this aspect of the game, so it really boils down to your own personal opinion.
It sounds to me like your friend is a PvP-centric person who spends most or all of his time in battlegrounds or arenas. For his playstyle, the things that you do would be considered pointless; most hardcore PvPers focus on mainly one or two characters, and usually that character is created with PvP in mind. Therefore, of course he's going to pick a race based on their racial abilities if all he is focused on is PvP, because some races are undeniable better than other races when it comes to certain aspects of PvP.
But as well know, everybody is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions. If you don't enjoy PvP as much and would prefer to enjoy PvE content and level alts, then there's nothing wrong with doing that. You don't have to do something just because others do it, you should simply play the game according to your own tastes and preferences and enjoy it for what it is to you, not what it is to other people.

Anyone know how I can convince him to think there's nothing wrong with what I do? I don't think what I'm doing works....
Have you tried getting a better friend?

Well, I'm back again...With my friend's problems.
This time apparently me liking leveling and alts is a bad thing, this game isn't for me? I'm looking forward to leveling in cataclysm and all my friend can think about is arena....Which don't get me wrong I like arena but I like leveling alot too. I kinda wish I was playing horde but he thinks it's dumb to choose a race for it's looks. This game isn't meant for looks? Guess he should go play with a calculator. He wants to stay alliance however, because they are better at pvp on our battlegroup? (Nightfall). Anyone know how I can convince him to think there's nothing wrong with what I do? I don't think what I'm doing works....
Or maybe you can just put in your opinion on the situation. I think there's nothing wrong with liking a certain aspect of this game.
Arena is 10 matches a week, right? That's a lot of time to level horde alts far away from your 'friend.'

The thing I like about World of Warcraft - the thing that has kept me playing it for far longer than any other game- is that the things that you can do are almost limitless. There's no real set way to play. I know people that live for arenas. I personally can't stand them, because I don't have the reflexes necessary to win consistently. I don't begrudge the people that love arenas, though. I prefer battlegrounds because they're a little more forgiving.
Like the OP, I enjoy playing alts. I'm on my 7th now- she's a mere child at 26, but she's fun. I don't have a lot of time to do raids during the week when my guild raids, and I hate doing PUGs. I could spend my hour or two per night farming, but that also gets repetitive.
My local friend thinks I'm nuts for having so many alts, but then he's always tired during the week because he's always trying to raid for shinies. I also don't begrudge him his playstyle- part of the game is acquisition of gear at endgame. However, I don't feel the same lure to having the best epics that he does. That doesn't make either of our gaming experiences wrong, just different.
Here's a sample of some of the things you can do in the game and still not be playing it wrong:
·Farming materials
·Crafting items for use or for sale
·Leveling alts
·Arenas
·Battlegrounds
·Farming heroics for badges
·Playing the Auction House for profit
·Running old-content dungeons for profit
·Achievement farming
·Doing the newest content for rewards and world firsts.
There's so many other things you can do and still not be playing the game "wrong". As long as your playstyle doesn't adversely affect anyone else's playstyle, then you can play how you want. And if you don't want to do arenas, but your buddy likes them and wants an arena buddy 24/7, he's being selfish. His right to enjoy the game shouldn't cut into yours.
And a side note- I feel that you miss out on the game somewhat if you haven't at least seen the other faction- there's a lot of storyline that compliments or fleshes out storylines that you've seen on the faction you've already played.

I agree. If you get bored levelling, you can go work on professions. If you get bored with endgame, you can work on achievements, and so on. The beauty of this game is that it caters to many different people with different playstyles.

This is also true. Some of the quests are similar, but they're all different and they all have good lore behind them. For example, all of my characters are/will be Draenei, but I also have one Horde character so I can see the other side. There are a lot of zones that are only for one faction (besides the starting zones) that have great lore behind them. Duskwood for example. It's pretty much Alliance only and has a LOT of lore behind it, so Horde-only players will miss out on it.
As for your friend, just tell him, politely, that you don't enjoy Arenas like he does and you enjoy leveling/other things more. And as for him saying that you shouldn't pick a race solely on looks... That's dumb because some people never PvP so they'd rather pick a race that they would be able to look at for 80+ levels (barring race changes).
He wants to stay alliance however, because they are better at pvp on our battlegroup? (Nightfall).
Alliance better at PvP? Hah, that's a laugh. (Note that I play Alliance)
