Now that the last major patch of this expansion has been released, I feel it's safe to ask why the obsidian destroyers were never among the Scourge forces in Wrath of the Lich King. I mean, their model exists
in game
, and they were one of my favorite Scourge units in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

They were ret-conned to be part of the AQ forces rather than the Lich King's army. Orginally, it was the Lich King who created them, but now it was Emperor Vek'lor of the Qiraji (aided by C'thun).

Players of World of Warcraft are expected to encounter a number in Ahn'Qiraj. These living statues were also used by the Scourge during the aftermath of the Second Invasion and are still used in Northrend. The fact that the Scourge are using the same constructs as the Qiraji puzzled many people.
However, the obsidian destroyers aren't so much related to the greater Scourge but rather the crypt fiends, a branch of the Scourge forces. Crypt fiends are actually undead nerubians, a race of spider people that reigned over Northrend before the coming of the Scourge. The nerubians and qiraji are both the descendants of the aqir, an insectoid race that prospered during the days of the mighty troll empires. It was thought that the obsidian destroyers were likely originally created by the aqir, and the power to do so carried on to both its descendants. According to the official Warcraft III strategy guide, though, obsidian statues where first created by the Lich King
However, in the Monsters of Ahn'Qiraj page, Blizzard states that it was Emperor Vek'lor who created the obsidian destroyers with the aid of C'Thun. It can be simply explained that Vek'lor created the obsidian destroyers that the qiraji used, but not all of them.
Stranger still is their total absence from the Azjol'Nerub or Scourge forces in Wrath of the Lich King despite having entered into many Nerubian themed locations.
tl;dr, no real reason given, but they probably should have been in AN
