SW: Pain glyph VS Dispersion glyph - PVE

Shadow Word: Pain
vs
Dispersion
I was wondering which would be better, for mana regeneration. On longer multi-target fights like Putricide, I find myself to be mana-starved sometimes, and a couple times, even OOM, as a Spriest.
Pain glyph restores 1% of BASE mana, Dispersion restores 36% of TOTAL mana. I've calculated the mp5 of Pain's mp5, Dispersion's mp5, and Glyphed Dispersion's mp5:
Shadow Word: Pain Mp5
Unglyphed Dispersion Mp5
Glyphed Dispersion Mp5
So, 568 - 355 = 213 mp5 increase from glyphing Dispersion.
213 mp5 > 64 mp5
I'm pretty sure it would be a DPS loss though, to be dispersing much more often. But I do like the added survivability of being able to uber-shieldwall more often =P Especially on fights like Sindragosa, being able to just ignore Unchained Magic, and then just use Dispersion to blow off the stacks (This DOES work.)

A matter of choice, I guess. While 213 mp5 may look alluring, take a look at what you'd lose (I know, you've pointed this one out.). Let's say, that you do 8000 dps and use 3 Dispersions throughout the fight and those 3 dispersions turn into 144000 lost damage done. If you are supposed to get OOM without that additional mana, I'd go with Dispersion (which I actually did for last 2 months or so). In other case, I'd stick with SW:P. Anyway, I'm glad that I'm not the only one to actually struggle with mana as a Spriest :p

This is the point. Dispersion is OMG-useful in ICC, especially after the first four bosses. It's less of a mana issue than a survival issue. Fester, Sindra, LK, BQL all have mechanics that invite intelligent (ab)use of Dispersion. Oh really, Swarming Shadows? Think I'll just stand here Dispersed, instead of running around dropping purple flames around the raid. Bingo, all your flames in one tidy pile. Forget dps loss; you just saved your raid a lotta trouble. And the dps increase on Sindragosa is phenomenal, since you can actually dps instead of staring at your Unchained Magic timer.

Gotta admit, loss of damage done > dead spriest :p

Paolo, you are correct, however, this is true in ICC. OUTSIDE of ICC raiding, I would go SWP > Dispersion. Perhaps if you're doing heroics only, Dispersion glyph isn't bad either.

I'm currently only raiding ICC on my priest. I heal heroics because I refuse to wait half an hour or more in queue =/
I'll test it out tonight and see what happens.

Well the more haste I get, the more often I'm casting VT and DP, and I don't have T9 2pc anymore. I mean, some fights, yeah, I'll only use Shadowfiend, but on fights like Putricide where I'm constantly switching targets, or keeping DoTs up on multiple mobs, my mana runs dry really fast.

Personally i prefer dispersion. But i dont really have any mana issues, i just take it for the extra survivability, + the fact that it makes my shadowspec more viable in pvp aswell :p
With that being said im main disc, and going shadow i just switch around a few pieces to get hitcapped, so i dont rock that much haste that many other shadowpriest may do, i rock crit instead. That may help alot on my mana as shadow.

I'll be losing 2pc t9 this week
That's our difference. T9 2pc is worth quite a bit of mp5, because it makes you not have to cast VT as often, saving quite a bit of mana over time.

Just wanted to remind folks that for shadow priests in general (and on putricide) more than 50% of your damage is from dots so really that lost damage doesn't come out so high.
It'll be somewhere closer to 144,000 * 0.5 =
72,000
a 200dps loss over a 6 minute fight (assuming you would have been able to dps full strength during the time you were dispersed).

Here's a great macro for all you dispersers out there
#showtooltip Dispersion
/cancelaura Dispersion
/cast Dispersion
What it does is that if you have dispersion it cancels dispersion, if not it casts dispersion
It's awesome for the times you only need 4s and not 6s to survive > more dmg.
could prolly put in some more stuff but it works like this.

The great thing about glyphs is they are cheap and you can switch them whenever you want. Do you really have to decide on which one is better overall? Buy a stack of each and switch them as you see fit.
